i am working on a ASUS X551C laptop running win 7 prof svc pack 1.  (yes, i know it’s a POS).  i’m using Acronis from the crucial/support/ssd website to clone the WD HDD 500GB to a Crucial 256GB SSD,  I’ve tried the automatic & manual cloning process.  it will successfully clone the drive to the SSD.  I then close the Acronis software and do a normal shutdown.  swap the drives.  It will boot to windows on the SSD, and then start installing multiple base level software drivers and then it reboots and on reboot, it fails with a BSOD and every boot there-after.  on the HDD, i’ve verified that all devices are correctly functioning (all +’s in device manager).  i’ve verified there is plenty of free space on the HDD and on the SSD after cloning.

what am i doing wrong?  how can i fix this?

    many thanks.

If you have another drive, try creating an image with Acronis then restore the image to the ssd. Years ago I had a few failures with Acronis cloning but worked with image restoration.

Boot into Safe Mode and let Windows settle for 10 minutes, then boot normally. Let us know how it goes.

Never clone. Create a full image copy and restore to new drive.

      all,

thanks for all the suggestions.  as this was a cleanup/refurbish project for a young student who only needs something to do web research, type papers, etc, i have given up on cloning the Win 7 professional system and installed Ubuntu instead.  This gives the student a nice, speedy laptop that will do all that they need to do.
