• Clock in taskbar…

Is there a way to have windows keep time as it does now, but not display it in the taskbar? I use a different clock program that I can place anywhere on the desktop, but the little windows time/date is in the right side of the toolbar on both my monitors. Thanks.

      • Open Settings.
      • Click on Time & language.
      • Click the Date & time tab.
      • Turn on the “Hide time and date in the System tray” toggle switch.

Thanks, Susan, but there is no setting on my version of things that has a “Hide time and date in the system tray”, at least not that I can find. Not in time and language/date and time, and you can see below I searched for a setting “hide time” and that came up no results for hide time. I do have Start11 installed, Winaero Tweaker, but I can’t find anything in either of those that addesses taskbar date and time display.

I don’t have Windows 11 22H2, but I do have Windows 10 22H2. There’s a way to get rid of the system clock in Windows 10 that may have a similar sequence in Windows 11 to get rid of it.

Try right clicking on the Taskbar and see if a context menu pops up. If it does, see if there’s a listing that says something to the effect of “Taskbar settings”. If that’s there, click it.

In Windows 10, this brings up the settings for the Taskbar, and scrolling about a third to half way down the page will reveal a listing that says “Notification area” that has two items listed in blue colored text below it.

One of those says “Turn system icons on or off”. Clicking that leads to a list of all of the possible system icons that can be shown in the notification area of the Taskbar and sliders to turn them on or off. One of them is simply labeled “Clock”, and clicking it’s slider immediately turns off the clock in the lower right corner of the Taskbar’s notification area.

Take a look and see if you have anything like this with your installation of Windows 11 22H2.

If you find that you have nothing like what I’ve described, then I think that your answer may lie within one of the settings within either Winaero Tweaker or Start 11. There could be a setting within either that will allow either Susan’s solution to be visible (so you can use it) or perhaps something similar to my description above to be visible so you can use it.

Here’s hoping this helps at least a bit!

I am using StartAllBack (same as Start11 for all practical purposes).
I am also missing the settings Susan mentioned, and it was driving me crazy b/c I knew the setting was there somewhere.
      I found it.
      Control Panel\Notification Ares\System Icons
A small link at the bottom left “Turn System icons on or off.”
But I cannot change it – it says “Some settings are managed by your System Administrator.”

I think StartAllBack has changed Group Policy settings (if Pro) or Policy settings in the Registry (Home and Pro) so that the User cannot change it through the GUI. I have seen this same notice when I make GP settings to contain some of Microsoft’s overreach.

MS continues to make it harder and harder to find the settings to tweak the “experience.” I hate using third-party tweakers because it makes the User DUMB. You have no idea where you’ve been sabotaged.

I think StartAllBack has changed Group Policy settings (if Pro) or Policy settings in the Registry (Home and Pro) so that the User cannot change it through the GUI.

Towards that end, I might have a starting point towards a solution for the OP ( @rdleib ).

After doing some digging around in GP on Windows 10 22H2, I found a setting that is supposed to completely turn off the system clock for (all?) users. Since this “solution” is within Group Policy, it’s confined to use on a Windows 10 or 11 Pro system, as the Home edition doesn’t have a fully functional Group Policy editor.

On Windows 10, I went to User Configuration>Administrative Templates>Start Menu and Taskbar, and I clicked on the listing for Start Menu and Taskbar which brought up not only a listing for a folder labeled “Notifications” but also a whole slew of individual policy listings affecting both the Taskbar and the Start Menu. A little over half way down this long list is a policy setting called “Remove Clock from the system notification area”. The description of this policy states that enabling it will remove the clock from the notification area.

Bear in mind, this is on Windows 10 22H2, but I’m holding out hope that there’s an identically labeled setting in nearly the same place within GPEdit on Windows 11 22H2. Per the description, this setting’s been around a while, since the minimum requirements for it are Windows Server 2003 or Windows XP Professional.  😉

If this is a valid policy setting within Windows 11 Pro 22H2, then all we need is someone who can tell us where the corresponding setting within the registry is for those who are on Windows 11 Home 22H2.

By the way, I dug around in User Configuration because I didn’t find anything at all digging around in Computer Configuration.

Ah, it’s getting late. I have Win11 22H2. I went to Control Panel, but have no Notification Area in small icons or in category, nor do I have an entry for System Icons anywhere that I can find.

On the plus side, I did ran Group Policy as Administrator, User Configuration>Administrative Templates>Start Menu and Taskbar, and I clicked on the listing for Start Menu and Taskbar which brought up not only a listing for a folder labeled “Notifications” but also a whole slew of individual policy listings affecting both the Taskbar and the Start Menu. A little over half way down this long list is a policy setting called “Remove Clock from the system notification area”.

Found it! Enabled it! Rebooted! date/time remains on the taskbar. Drat.

Ran Group Policy again, and it says Remove Clock is enabled. Drat.

Do really appreciate the input, folks. Hitting the rack.

Your third-party tweakers are preventing you from changing it.
Look through their program settings and see if you have the option there.

Registry setting that “should” turn it off.

      Open regedit and go to

      HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced

Create a “new” DWORD entry called HideSystrayDateTimeValueName

      Set it’s value to 1

Well, it isn’t currently resolved, but evidently it will be in some future release. That’s good enough for me, my whole system is a bit rocky these days, don’t want to make anything worse. Thanks, everyone, for all your input and thoughts/ideas.
