I just discovered something called “Clip Book” on my system. I am running win2k with all updates.

What in the world is Clip Book – what does it do and why would I want it? Would it allow me to see the various versions(copies – images) of the clip board that I sometimes get warned about (I always assumed that was nag ware, but now I’m wondering).

Clipbook is part of Windows 2000: from Appendix A: Purpose of Microsoft Windows 2000 Services:[indent]

This service depends on the NetDDE/Network Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE) service to create the actual file shares that can connect to other computers. The Clipbook application and service allow users to create the pages of data to share.

[/indent]If you don’t share clipboard items with remote users, you don’t need this.

I’ve never been an active user of Win2K so I was unaware of what Hans pointed out in his post. BUT, if you’re like most other Windows users, you might want to consider installing a third-party program for clipboard management. It so happens I’ve used ClipMate Clipboard Extender for many years, but there are programs around and if you search The Lounge you’ll find a few choices. Clipboard management programs are helpful in large degree because they allow you to keep multiple clips availalble for access.

The Clipbook program also “allows you to save and recall many different pages of standard text or graphics.” Many people actually pay for programs that do this, not realizing they already have one!

But keep in mind that this must only be true in Win2K. In Win XP, the program clipbrd.exe is still around but it holds only ONE image of something in the clipboard.

From Serenity Windows 98 Tips & Hacks:
“Windows 98 but not 95 includes two programs from Windows 3.1 & 3.11 / Windows for Workgroups (WFW) 3.1 & 3.11 (Windows 3.1, 3.11. and WFW 3.1 are basically the same program – 3.11 included bug fixes amd WFW 3.1 included networking, WFW 3.11 was a substantial upgrade and included toolbars and VCache) despite official Microsoft statements to the contrary (see Q159852).

These are Cardfile and Clipbook. Cardfile is a simple database that can have pictures in it and dial numbers, it is supplied without a help file in Windows 98. Clipbook is similar to Clipboard Viewer but allows multiple items to be saved and allows the sharing of the clipboard over the network. There is no way to get Windows to install these programs, they must be manually installed.

The easiest way to install is to type SFC in the Start – Run… dialog box and choose Extract a file. Enter the following filenames one at a time;

cardfile.exe
clipbook.exe
clipsrv.exe
clipbook.hlp

Create a new folder in your Programs Files folder, it can be called anything (perhaps Progs311) and copy the three .exe files here. Copy the .hlp file to C:WindowsHelp. Select all three .exe files and drag on to the Start Menu.”

And if you really want to stretch things, you can run the CLIPBOOK.INF file from the 95 CD to install it on that O/S.

Edited: But I forgot, of course, about XP! Looking round the traps, it appeared to be problematic and was removed/ disabled.
