Chrome start-up oddity

My wife’s laptop running Vista has suddenly developed the ailment of Chrome start-up on the last website visited. I’ve checked the Options and it is firmly set for Home Page start up, and Home Page is set for New Tab, so she is basically expecting to get a blank screen. It’s almost as if somehow it has got into ‘Open with last web page visited’ and got stuck there.

I’ve run Malwarebytes for a clear and she has MSE on the machine.

Any ideas please.

Can you attempt to change the home page to something else, say Google, then back to a blank page to see if there is any affect on the outcome.

Thanks for replying, Ted. I tried that with the only success that on start up it now throws three pages – two recently visited and a New Tab page, with that taking third place !

I’m thinking along the line now of doing a re-install.

Yes, I would uninstall Chrome at this point, perhaps using Revo Uninstaller then reinstall the latest version. I do use Chrome as my backup browser and have none of these problems.

That sounds like an extremely valued setting that I add specifically in case the browser closes unexpectedly for any reason since I basically never close the browser.
Click on the little wrench in the upper right corner and choose options. The first general setting is what to open on startup…yours is probably set to reopen the pages that were open last.

OP specifically states it is not set to open last page, but to open home page and home page is set to blank. That is why it appears something is corrupted. Not sure what else might be happening.

Ted, the OP doesn’t have his home page set to a blank page, but is set to open Chrome’s new tab which shows icons the most visited web sites. See:

OK I misread what he says. He says she expects to see a blank page but what she is getting is the last page visited, not the new tab page you linked to. It probably should be getting the new tab page (I do not use Chrome much and have an actual Home Page set so do not see this feature at all). Is that the way you are interpreting what the OP states as well?

Not exactly sure. The OP should clairify. It could be he is seeing exactly what Chrome is set up to show when you select new tab on startup rather than a home page. In any case, you can’t get a blank screen like he expected.

OK, This is what my NewTab looks like in Chrome. Rob is this what you are talking about, or does it indeed go back to the last web site she was visiting before you closed the browser down.

Chrome opens up to a listing of your most frequently visited pages. In the lower right corner you can choose to see recently closed pages. Dead center on
the bottom of the page you have two choices, the first is the most frequently visited page which is the default open, and the other choice is your apps page where you can see what apps you have installed -this would show your add blockers, Web of Trust or any other helper apps you have installed into your browser. It will look like this:

OK I think I need to go back to square one ! Both my wife and I like to have a blank screen when the browser opens -viz ‘about:blank’ in IE. This doesn’t (didn’t?) exist on Chrome so I found that if I dragged all the rubbish off the page it would come back under New Tab as a clean sheet.

Both machines are set up the same way in the manner that Ted has highlighted (thanks Ted for your efforts). Mine is still producing a clean page on start up but “her ladyship’s” isn’t, and is coming up with all these loaded tabs. Now knowing her propensity for careless key and mouse handling ….. well perhaps I’d better not go down that road as she might read this!:rolleyes: I’ve double checked that the settings are all the same and can find nothing in the Options area that is out of kilter.

I wonder if perhaps this has something to do with you cleaning out pages when the browser closes and she does not. I’m just guessing here as Chrome is just my secondary browser and I’m running out of suggestions.

Here is what mine looks like when I open after clearing history:

I also clear history using CCleaner daily for both IE9 and Chrome to clear cookies and history. I have no idea if this has any affect on your problem or not.

It might also be informative to know which new tab page is opening on the one that works, is it the Most visited page or the Apps page.
I didn’t see a way of removing the placeholders for the most visited but pretty much all the apps can be removed making it seem like a blank page if new tab always opens the Apps page; the most visited icons still being on the other page.

Either way, its probably not a good idea to be dragging stuff off of, and trying to alter the basic structure of the browser; if you set it to Google search page, there’s almost nothing on that and it pops up almost as fast as a blank page, speed of opening being the only advantage of having a blank page in the first place right? Still have to go somewhere from there and I find Chromes methodology for handling bookmarks is still a bit in the stone age period of development.

Chrome also starts a new instance if a tab is click dragged out of the browser and you can also right click on the tab and select Pin tab; could check the tabs that are opening on start and make sure that they were not pinned at some point, don’t know if that would always bring them back with a fresh start or not but its something to check.

Barring any of that working I think you’re at the point of a good Revo uninstall and trying a fresh install of Chrome.

I have every sympathy with the OP — I have a similar problem with a rogue page that insists on opening even though it was not open when I last closed Chrome. Not only that, Chrome auto-starts on boot-up. There is something in the synchronisation with my gmail account that is causing this because if I reinstall without synching then all seems OK but I would have to reconstruct my toolbar and favourites and I can’t yet be bothered to do that (I suppose I could export them then reimport them rather than allowing google to synch, but I want to use synch because it is convenient off-site). I have tried all manner of scouring, cleaning and registry cleaning using CCleaner, Glary utilities, startup manager tools and god knows what else all to no avail. Very irritating. I have also scoured the web looking for what causes the auto-start but every thread seems to end in “reinstall” without addressing a proper solution.
Chrome is also installed in my wife’s account on the same PC and that is fine.
For now I am just putting up with it but I suspect if I could find a way of clearing out the cache of my settings that Google has stored ON THE WEB and then re-synch upwards from my PC with only my homepage tab open then this might solve it.
