• Choosing paper type (Word 2002)

Is there any way to define in a document which type of paper the actual document or template is printing to?

The environment is Citrix and we have defined all printers centrally – now we are testing if we can control the type of paper used from any given template-based document. We have configured some printers (the centrally configured printer-drivers) with information on what kind of paper the actual printer has (e.g. logo paper in tray 1 and blank paper in tray 2) and the idea is that all relevant templates should include information that page 1 should go to “Logo paper” and all the other pages should go to “Blank paper”.

But as far as I can tell the definition of this is not stored with the template (or document) – it is only configured through the printer. There is no options in File | Page setup… to define what type af paper to use for first page / other pages. This information is only configurable via File | Print… | Properties… and hence it is not possible to save the setting with the template.

Am I right or am I missing something?

Hi there… In Word 2002, they have changed the tabs and settings therein. To perform the task you want, open the desired template, go to File, Page Setup, and select the second tab, Paper. In the middle of the dialog box, there is an area defined as Paper Source with a First Page and Other Pages. After changing the selections in First and Other Pages, click on the Default button in the bottom left corner. A msgbox should appear asking if you would like to save this default to the template, answer yes. Anytime a user opens this template, the direction of the paper will now be defined as set in the Paper Source. If you need anything else, just let me know… good luck! trish

        Hi Trish

Thanx for your reply – the setting you are referring to usually allows me to select which TRAY (upper tray, lower tray, tray 1 etc.) the first page and subsequent pages go to, but it doesn’t give me the possibility to choose what PAPER the first page and subsequent pages are printed on. This information is in the printer definition dialogue boxes (File | Print… | Properties…) and I would like to store the paper choice in the template without choosing which tray the paper is in – as this information is set up in the printer-driver and on the printer.

The Page Setup definition (after having configured the paper choices on the printer and in the printer-driver) only allows me to choose between “Standard” and “Form Select”, but I can’t figure out how the “Form Select” choice works.

Any more ideas ore hints are most welcome…

There is definitely no “built-in” way for Word to match a paper type with a tray across any number of printers. Using a PCL driver, I believe Page Setup will show you paper types, but I suspect that these merely store a tray number that may not be meaningful on a different printer. Lately I use the PostScript driver, so I don’t have a lot of experience with those extra options. Maybe they’re more intelligent than I think/remember?
