• Choose when updates installed greyed out

I have been trying to upgrade/update my system:
    Windows 10 Pro 1809 64-bit / Intel Core i7-8700 CPU @ 3.20GHz / 16GB RAM
to 1903 for a while now and I am failing miserably. I can’t even follow Woody’s advice to set feature to 180 days because all items under ‘Choose when updates are installed’ are greyed out and unchangeable. And no matter what I try, they stay that way.

I would like to make those settings active again and then to upgrade to 1903, but how. Any solutions gratefully received.

    Thanks in anticipation

What build of 1809 are you using? Type “winver” (without quotes) in the search box. the build should look like 17763.xxx
Has your computer been updating monthly
Do you have any Pause set?
Do you have any “Metered connections” set?

Hi, You are right about the version.
Computer has been updating -up to date at 10:25 this morning.
      Pause is off.
      Metered connections is…Off

What is the BUILD number? The build should look like 17763.xxx

      It is indeed 17763.914

The reason I asked was, those settings disappeared/were grayed out for several Builds a while back.
Next question, have you changed any settings in Group Pollicy or the Registry? Doing that can cause the pulldowns to be grayed out also?

Settings in Group Policy are as they were.

I have looked at them over the last 24 hours but decided changing the settings wouldn’t help.
      Same with Registry

Settings in Group Policy take presidence over the Registry settings which are GUI based.
If you have those settings set in Group Policy, You should make the changes there if you want 1903. Otherwise you will not get any Feature updates until 1809 has been out over 360 + 60 days.
If there no settings in Group Policy, then the grayed out settings you see are a reflection of what is set in the Registry, again blocking 1903. If that is the case, come back and I will give you the Registry settings to change.

After 1903 downloads, you should disconnect from the Internet before the restart. After the install is finished (still disconnected), if the GUI pulldowns are still grayed out, if you go in and undo the Group Policy settings, you should regain use of the pulldowns in the Win Update GUI. Then you can reset the deferrals where you want them using the pulldowns.

All the settings in Local Group Policy Editor – Windows update
      are set as Not configured

Does your account have admin privileges? Is this a domain-joined PC?

Did you also look under Windows Update for Business. That is a sub key under Windows Update. If there are settings there, you should change them. If nothing there is Enabled and there are no settings use the Registry settings for GUI below. The WU for Business settings take precidence over the GUI settings below. The settings may be in hex.
The Registry setting for WU for Business (if you want to check) is:
        HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate and \AU

        Registry location for GUI settings:
        HKLM\Software\Microsoft\WindowsUpdate\UX\Settings
There should be an entry for Feature updates set to 360. Change that to 120.

Admin account yes. Domain joined? Tis just one PC not linked to any domain name.

PKC – I think you have come up with the answer!
Under Windows Update for Business (which I haven’t touched previously)
there was the entry 360 which I have changed as you suggested.

Now we shall wait and see…

      Many, many thanks
