I have two Win 7 laptops upgraded to Win 10 and the Creators Update.
Since updating one, the startup has changed and having checked all of the drivers are up to date etc. decided to run a chkdsk /f
Unfortunately this didn’t execute on the restart with it just booting back into Windows.
I restored back to 1607 14393.138 and found that the chkdsk did work after the reboot.
To determine if it was 1703 or computer specific I tried the chkdsk /f on the other machine and got the same boot back into Windows.
I phoned up MS tech support and after explaining what was happening, suddenly got the disconnected tone.
Not knowing what had happened there – rang up again for just the same to happen with a second tech – Ignorant Bs
A Google suggested going into the registry and navigating to –
HKEY_LOCAL_MCHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControl and clicking on SessionManager to check that the BootExecute was showing as Autocheck autochk*
In the 1703 machine that showed as (from memory) Autocheck autocheck /?? C: Autocheck autochk*
When I right clicked on BootExecute and Modify that was split into two lines with Autocheck autochk* on a second line.
I back spaced out the top line and brought the second line to the first position – rebooted, but the chkdsk still wouldn’t execute.
On checking the now 1607 machine, I found that just had Autocheck autochk* so not sure why it still fails to run in 1703 with the registry modified.
I’m unable to revert that machine back to 1607 as with it seeming to run okay, I ran Disk Cleanup and got rid of Windows.old.
I was wondering if those with 1703 could check to see if a chkdsk /f will execute on theirs after the restart and the same for those in the Insider Ring.
If it doesn’t work for the latter as well, could they use the feedback to report it.
I tried using the Feedback Hub but have to sign in with a MS account which I don’t have or wish to create.
However, it will run from the cmd prompt in Recovery where a reboot isn’t required to dismount the volume – which found nothing wrong as did a sfc /scannow in normal mode.
