I can’t find an answer for this; maybe I’ve searched incorrectly. But if not…

We all know the dangers of clicking on “check for updates”. But will it override group policy? If a PC is on 2004, and the target version is set for 21H1, and you click on “check for updates”, will it override that group policy and install either 21H2 or Windows 11? If you are on 21H1 with a target version of 21H2, will it go right to W11? Thanks!

The correct answers to your questions depends on the settings you have with regards to Windows Update on your machine. So we can give you the correct answers (and procedures if  you decide that you might need to make any changes), please answer the following question:

Do you have Windows 10 Home or Windows 10 Professional?

Windows 10 Home uses settings within the registry and Windows 10 Professional uses settings within the Group Policy Editor. Because of this difference, we need to be able to tell you the right place to look for the right settings. Once we know what settings you have within your installation of Windows, we can then give you the correct answers to your questions.

It is Windows 10 Pro, which is why I mentioned the group policies. If the target version is set in group policy (using gpedit) will “check for updates” override that if a later version is available?
