Chart/Graphs created in PP aren’t displayed (Powerpoint 2003)

Charts that I create within PP aren’t shown on the slide. I get a white box the size of the chart, with a red-x on white background in the upper left corner. When I click on the box, the created chart opens (and the information on the chart is correct), but when I leave that the chart doesn’t show on the slide. This isn’t a problem on another machine in the office. If I transfer the ppt file to the other machine (Dell) and create a viewer disk, the viewer disk on my computer (Gateway portable) works just fine.

Open PPT and go to Help/Check for Updates. Install SP-1 for Office 2003. This is a critical update for PPT 2003 especially, as it fixes most of these “missing pictures/objects” issues.

Thanks for suggestion.
SP-1 is already there (I tried to download and install, just to be sure).
This happens in word as well (I had post on other board).
Somebody on a board (not sure whether it was here or not) said that the problem I’m having is generally intermittent and couldn’t be solved easily because it couldn’t be replicated. I can replicate it pretty consistently (always!)
I’m also having a problem (this one is intermittent) opening clip art from clip art manager. I can load directly from Clipart folder, though. I had a problem with this a while back, and uninstalled the WOPR tools (sorry Woody, don’t take it personally). Then it worked. Not working again.
Is this/these issue(s) something that qualify for contact with the Microsoft support team? What does it mean that I get three free “helps”.? Does this mean three contacts to solve one problem, or is each problem considered the “free consultation” until it is resolved, no matter how many contacts it takes?
I appreciate all of the help that’s been given, and as well any that might come in the future.

With intermittent, non-reproducible problems, it can indeed be difficult to find the cause. But since yours is a display issue — or seems to be, at least — I’d start with changing hardware acceleration http://www.rdpslides.com/pptfaq/FAQ00129.htm%5B/url%5D since SP-1 didn’t resolve the problem.

Re I’m also having a problem (this one is intermittent) opening clip art from clip art manager, you’re going to have to give more info to go on here. We can’t see what’s happening there, and “problem opening clip art” covers a lot of ground.

Do you have a service warranty or something that came with your computer? If so, you might try calling the support people, although it may be your computer manufacturer, not Microsoft itself. The worst that can happen is they tell you it’s not free and you have to pay before they’ll go any further…

Thanks. This is what happened:

First item, ran the accelerator all the way to the left, with no improvement. Did I mention that if I open the file I’ve created on another machine (Dell , also Windows XP, also Office 2003), it will open just fine. I can then create “viewer disk” and run it on my machine and it is fine. Go figure!

Second item. My misunderstanding came from the following phrase on the support page http://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.a…680&gprid=36071. The phrase was “2 support requests submitted online or by a phone call are included at no charge”, which I interpreted to mean I got two support requests at no charge. Not so, huh?

Third item, I go insert/picture/clipart….clip art manager opens. I select an item, click on it and I get this message “Error! Not a valid embedded object.”. I seem to remember something about how to fix this once upon a time, but can’t find it. In my case, once upon time (I’ve only had the machine for six months, so it hasn’t been that long ago) I had the problem, then I uninstalled the “WOPR’ disk that came with the Office 2003 book, and then it worked fine. For awhile.

I solved the graphics problem I’ve been having (see below for issue with putting graphs into Excel, Word, and Powerpoint documents) by uninstalling the Word, Excel, and Powerpoint elements of 2003 and installing Office 2000 versions. It works fine, although the tech that helped me through the process couldn’t figure it out either. If anyone has any insights as to why this fix worked, I’d appreciate hearing from you.
A client of mine mentioned that I should be using Office XP instead of Office 2003 to improve the compatibility of the Office Suite with Windows XP Pro. Any ideas?

My idea would be not to rely on this client for technical information!

As for why PPT03 isn’t working, no, I don’t know. Some inter-application issues were created by Windows XP Service Pack 2, and if this is one of those, it may take a while for everything to get properly updated (signed, so that the component can run under SP2), or it might be necessary to re-embed the offending elements. I don’t use PowerPoint that way, so I don’t know.

I would be concerned about the stability of your system at this point if you have both Office 2000 and 2003 installed applications – they don’t always play well together. What version of Outlook are you running for example? Office will only allow you to have one in general. It is possible that there was something amiss with the original install that presumably came with your PC, and that simply doing an uninstall and reinstall would have fixed it. As for your client suggestion about Windows XP being more compatible with Office XP than 2003 – balderdash!
