Characters 32 to 127 are “regular” characters.
Characters 128 to 255 are the upper ANSI character set. The first hit in Google was http://www.fingertipsoft.com/3dkbd/ansitable.html%5B/url%5D.
In recent versions of Windows, many more characters are available: Unicode characters. See http://www.unicode.org[/url%5D.

Alt+130 is from an old DOS code page. Since there used to be lots of different DOS code pages, and since DOS is long dead, I wouln’t bother learning the DOS codes.

For the Windows code page 1252, which is listed in Hans’ first link, you need to type Alt+0XXX with a leading zero for characters 128 to 255.

I would like to say that it was from my quest for knowledge of DOS that sent me searching for this info but really my son came home from school and his grade 6 French teacher showed him how to get the é (acente graf e, I think). I had no idea it was possible. It’s amazing what an eleven year old can teach you.

You can also use windows own character map to see the alt-key combinations for specific characters. To run, do Winkey-R and enter “charmap”. You can pick the font to be used and copy characters to the clipboard selectively. The alt-key combo is shown in the bottom right corner, on the status line. It also has an advanced view to select character sets, and to search for a character by name.

I’m confused. Is that particular to an operating system? I have Win98 & Alt+R doesn’t do anything.

Sorry, that should have read “Win-R”, using the win-key shortcut to open the “Run” dialog. (And in case you have problems getting to it, the program is charmap.exe, and should be hiding in your windowssystem32 subdirectory.)
