A triangle is to be changed by increasing the length of the base by 40% and decreasing the length of its height by 40%.

Will the new area be change and, if so, will it be increased or decreased and by how much?

      KW,

How are things going out west?

The area will decrease by 16%

      As usual, nice going, Maudibe.

Everything is just great out here. Brief cold spell (according the locals) when we have a high in the high 60s and low in the mid-50s.
I’m not suffering!! LOL The cold snap broke and it’s back to 74 again.

Is it getting colder in PA?

Low’s in the 30’s at night, high’s in the 50’s and 60’s during the day. Old Mother Nature can’t make up her mind!

I here California’s “2013 Fire Season” ends this Saturday. That should lower the temperature in your neck of the woods a few degrees.

No fires in my neck of the woods near the Pacific. I’m in La Jolla which is a tab outside of San Diego. Paradise.

I believe the new area will be decreased by 16%.

      Let A1 = Original area = 1/2(bh)
      Let A2 = New area = 1/2(b x 1.4)(h x 0.6)

Note: 1.4 is a 40% increase in base and 0.6 represents a 40% decrease in height.

      New area = 1/2(0.84)(bh)

Therefore, the new area is 84% of the original area, which represents a 16% reduction in area.

Nicely done tqw! I used a similar method:
