    I have a Compaq Presario 2170US laptop.
It has a 40 gig harddrive and I’m running out of room.
I picked up a Western Digital 250 gig drive.
I don’t see a small cover to get to the hard drive.

I guess I have to remove the bottom cover of the laptop. (new territory for me)

Is this going to be a hard project? I’ve done several desk tops but not a laptop.

Will the 250 gig be any problems?
The laptop was purchased at Best buy. It was the only one I could find.
I came with no instructions or software. (Best buy wants you to have them install it)

I backed up the old drive to a USB drive that should boot. Then I should be able to restore to the new drive.
If this won’t work, I can just do a new windows XP Home install. This would be OK.

Thanks for any info or suggestions.

This appears to be the user manual: Compaq Presario 2170US Notebook PC: Manuals (Service Manual at the bottom of the list includes this shot.)

Notebooks can be strange beasts. You should make sure you have the most recent BIOS. I’d even try to contact HP support to make sure that a 250GB drive is supported in that PC.

I I tried HP chat support and they said my new 250 GB drive would not work.

I tried it anyway and it works just fine.
