Changing app installation location

According to this post (3rd or 4th reply down posted Aug 1, 2015) you can change the location to a new application installs. I’ve tried to install the latest Office version to another drive (D instead of the default C drive) but it doesn’t seem to work —- it gets installed on the C drive.

Bad info in the linked thread? If so, can it be done, a.k.a. point me in the right direction please? The linked thread also says you can’t move apps which appears to be true.

I’m running win10 anniversary version with latest updates.

AFAIK Office will always install to C.

In Windows 10, you can now select where your new Windows apps from the Store will install and save data to by default instead of on the Windows drive.

From the post you referenced: They are talking about the Windows Store apps.

Take a gander at this page were it says:

In Windows OS, by default, software get installed on your System Drive, usually C drive, in the Program Files folder. The typical path is normally in Windows 32-bit is*C:Program Files and in Windows 64-bit is C:Program Files and C:Program Files(x86).
Microsoft recommends the C:Program Files for default installation destination.*It’s a convention that ensures proper inter-operation between your program and the OS’s application and security models. So, once software programs are installed they go by default to C:Program files on the computer.
This can however be changed by selecting another folder or location or partition.

Office is hard-coded to install to C:Program Files. Not all programs, however, are hard-coded but instead default to C:Program Files.

I have most of my applications/programs (not Apps) installed in a “Program Files” folder on another partition. Some installation routines will offer a choice openly, others can be rerouted during the installation setup before installation actually begins.

There is a utility from Funduc Software called Application Mover that can move most installed programs to another partition. They recommend not moving Office.

Always create a fresh drive image before making system changes/Windows updates; you may need to start over!

We all have our own reasons for doing the things that we do with our systems; we don't need anyone's approval, and we don't all have to do the same things.

We were all once "Average Users".
