My Gateway CD-RW drive won’t eject. I see it in the drives, but the button on the machine doesn’t work, and even doing a “right-click” for the shortcut menu and clicking on “eject” doesn’t work. Anyone have any experience with this? I checked the Microsoft knowledge base. It reports this problem after loading and unloading multiple blank disks, but that’s not what’s happened here. It just stops ejecting, even on CDs it has ejected before.

I’m headed over to Gateway to see what they have to say, but wondered if anyone here had seen anything like this.

    Thanks.

Other than checking to make sure that the power supply connection has not fallen off, I would guess that a new drive is in order.

I’ve this problem caused by software before, is there anything that is using the drive? Creative’s Disc Detector was the culprit last time I saw this.

Do you see a small hole next to the eject button? If so, straighten out a paper clip and push it through the hole and it should open.

Thanks for the suggestions. I’m using Roxio Easy CD Creator 5 – it came with the machine. There is no hole in which to use a paper clip, unfortunately. But it is all still under warranty, so I will contact the people who loaded it all for me and see what they have to say. I just thought if anyone had seen this before, and there was a quick and easy fix, I wanted to try that before I had to send it anywhere.

It only happens sporadically, and I can always get it open by rebooting, then catching it when the system is checking the drive (i.e., when the light is lit). But that can be very inconvenient when I am in the middle of something.

Again, thanks so much for the responses. I love this place!

This sounds to me like a power issue to the cd drive. You can open the drive when you “catch” it during a reboot, and it opens, meaning there’s power to the drive, but sporadically you can’t open it any more, as if the power has been turned off. Are there pwr mgmt settings in the cd’s properties that have been set to turn off the cd when not in use?

Make sure you upgrade to the latest EZCD creator 5. You may have to uninstall it first and re-install. I remember having the same problem but can’t recall the exact solution.

I’m surprised as well. I thought that all CD manufacturers had adopted that Apple duck standard. hiding.
Tia, have another look – the hole is very small (no bigger than the paper clip) and it should be just underneath the tray. It could be on either side.

The hole could also be behind a face plate as well.

My Dell has a CD-ROM with the hole exposed and a CDRW with the hole behind a rounded face plate.

So you may need to pop off the face plate to get at the hole.

Have you tried powering down the computer and rebooting?
