CD RW (Windows XP)

Hello Everyone

I have a deadline to meet, can anyone provide me with a solution to get my CD RW working, I can’t seem to get it to record.

I have gone to the control panel, and checked the device manager, I have checked the location in the General tab, and it indicates 0.

What do I need to do so that I can correct this problem? I think I need to go into regedit, but I don’t know exactly where to go.

If you are trying to use the built-in XP recording capability right click on the CD-RW drive in Windows Explorer and select properties. There should be a ‘Recoring’ tab. Make sure ‘Enbable CD recording on this drive’ is checked.

As Joe indicated, it would be exceptionally helpful to know what software you are using to get the burn done…any errors? Can you describe your process?

I could kiss you guys, you both are life savers! WyllyWylly, I am using the Roxio Easy CD Creator 5, I have disabled the Windows Generic burner, should I put the Generic back to manual?

If you disabled the IMAPI CD-ROM Burning Service, which is what it sounds like you’ve done, try re-enabling it and see if you can record. It can cause all kinds of wonky problems when it is disabled.

Hello Mark, Joe:

I re-started the IMAP CD Burning device, however I am still having the same problem. I followed Joe’s advice, went to Windows Explorer, Selected the “D” drive, but my General Tab on has a section for me to type the label.

I went to the Hardware Tab, clicked on the name of the CD RW, and clicked properties, I clicked properties again, and noticed that the check mark for “Enable digital CD Audio for this CD-Rom Device is “Checked.”

I went back to Windows Explorer and dragged the file from my documents to the “D” drive. I tested the the file by opening the document and it did work. However before I created my post, I went to Google Groups, and did a search, and found the following:

Open Direct CD, and Select Erase CD Option, “To release the Control Direct CD has over it.”

Mark, could it be that there is a 0 for location, which I assume would be the regedit?

Not sure what you mean by “0 for location” – but DirectCD might be the problem, too. When it is active, it interferes with CD-ROM access. Try disabling at startup that as a next step, and then reboot. Keep us posted…

Hello Mark,

I followed your instructions, and at start-up, it was already unchecked, so I checked it, and rebooted the system, Easy CD started to work; the problem could be the CD RW, because even though there was already a CD in drive “D”, it would ask me to insert a blank CD.

I tried again this morning, and now I get an error message saying “The request could not be performed because of I/O device error.” could you shed some light on the meaning of this message.

Before concluding that the drive is kaput, try changing the cable that attaches to the drive from the motherboard – a fair amount cheaper and also a possibility. What this error is telling you is that the computer has waited too long for the device to become ready. It could occur because of hibernation/suspend, but in the case of optical drives it usually means the hardware is failing.

I had my computer consultant drop by, and he said that it was that the CD, it was not formatted properly, he tested the “D” drive, and also ran his CD cleaner and the “D” drive worked fine.

I will monitor the situation, and post back, I did take a look at the software section, and I read the thread pertaining to Nero v Roxio, but I am not too sure which way to go as of yet.

I understand a little more now, I thought you were trying to create a new compilation from scratch, and did not think that you might be using a formatted CD.

In any event, I’m glad you got some resolution – hope you make that deadline!
