the jumper (looking at the back) is all the way to the right.

all i have is one drive, when i install a CD, sometimes my computer locks up. where should the jumper be?

    thanks,

    Ty

The only spare CD drive I have that isn’t already in a machine has three pin positions and the two-pin pair on the right is the Master position. The two-pin pair in the middle is for Slave. Whether you choose Master or Slave depends on whether or not you’re connecting it to an IDE cable that already has another device on it. “Usually” a single device on a cable is Master and if there are two devices, one would be Master and the other Slave. There should be embossed marking on the drive to confirm what I say or contradict with a different pin layout.

Of course, in this business there are always unusual circumstances and not all devices work the same way…

What is the manufacturer of the drive and it’s model number?
It sounds like you have it set as “Master” but is it on the same IDE cable as your Hard Drive?
If it is, make it a “slave” by moving the jumper over one set of pins to the left.

Depends on what you mean by that. An IDE “chain” as they are usually called, connects from the motherboard by cable to either one or two devices (drives). When only one device is attached to an IDE cable, that device should have its jumper set to Master. A second device would then be jumpered as Slave. If you remove one of two devices from the cable that is jumpered as Master, the remaining device has to have its jumper changed from Slave to Master.

          I wouldn’t recommend it.
          See BigAl’s post.

Again….what make and model drive are you talking about?
