Hi. I’m thinking about buying a CD writer for my personal computer as a data back-up system. The OS I use is Windows XP. The available options like Sony, ASUS, etc. come with bundled software like Nero, Roxio, Prassi Primo, etc.

I’ve used Prassi Primo before at work and I like it because it allows me to save files and folders with long names. I have a habit of having long file names and multiple levels of folders. I also like Prassi because it copies the folder structure I have on my hard disk onto the CD. Also, I like it because I can use the burned CD on any computer and access the data.

I don’t know much about the other CD burning softwares. So, could someone please explain to me the different types of CD burning software? I’ve heard of ‘packet’ technology and other types of backing up technology and it’s a bit confusing. Also, I would appreciate it if you could recommend a particular software and why you recommend it.

    Thank you very much!

Most packages are the same – and I don’t know of one that wont’ let you drag and drop the folder structure onto the CD that will be burned. Long filename support depends upon the CD’s file system – they all have limitations to some degree.

Roxio ECDC 5 is popular but I have flaky problems with it from time to time. I prefer Nero because it’s never produced a coaster and always seems to just plain work – not as pretty as the Roxio product, but extremely effective. If you like Prassi, why not stick with it?

        Mark,

I like the Direct CD aspect of Roxio. Does Nero have anything similar?

        Thanks.

Unfortunately…..no. And Nero, again, has a more cluttered user interface. It *can erase RW discs if I recall correctly (can’t check that at the moment). Come to think of it, I don’t know any other package that includes the same range of functionality as ECDC, but I’m real leery of it nonetheless because it’s given me enough grief. This is why I ended up with both packages – each has a particular set of strengths.

Well, just let me eat those words with a side of ranch dressing.

Ahead Software (makers of Nero and Feurio) also produces InCD which appears to be identical in function to DirectCD. Shows you how much I use that feature…. blush

            Mark,

Thanks for the info and the link.

I have the latest version ECDC installed and I have the latest download from Roxio and it is supposed to support Direct CD but I have been leary about loading it on my XP machine. I hear that can become a chore to get installed properly on an XP computer. Where I bought the computer they loaded ESCD but didn’t install Direct CD with it. I’ll probably tackle it some day when I’m feeling lucky.

Hi Mark. Thank you very much for your posts. Yes, I think I’ll stick with Prassi Primo. I just wanted to hear other opinions. Thank you again.
