I am running Windows XP SP3. For no apparent reason (no new software installed, etc), my computer will no
longer read from or write to my DVD drive or my CD drive. The same is also true for my Floppy A drive. I have
performed deep scans to be sure no viruses are running. There are no yellow flags when i look at device manager.
The computer says all items are running correctly. I have uninstalled and removed the items from the list. Windows
shows them as new devices with current drivers, but nothing works. I have my hard drives in trays. Therefore, I
am able to remove my XP drive and insert my Windows Vista drive. Viola!!!! every things works perfectly. Does
anyone have a possible solution.

AskWoody LoungerDecember 5, 2009 at 11:02 pm #1189276I had this problem after loading Windows 7 and software, no DVD. This fixed my problem. Mine only had upper filters.
Start the Run Command Prompt
Type in “regedit” without the parenthesis then click ok
Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE – SYSTEM – CURRENT CONTROL SET – CONTROL – CLASS
Then find {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
The whole thing looks like this:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlClass{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}Then delete the upper and lower filters….
RESTART YOUR COMPUTER
Hope it fixes your problem.

I am sorry about the delay in not answering your post, but have been out of pocket for a bit.
I attempted to locate “4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318” in my register, but it is not there. Perhaps that is a code set by Windows 7 and not in XP. I am sure it is a problem in my register, as both you and Malcolm pointed out, since I have checked the drivers in both XP and Vista several times and am always advised that the proper ones are there. These drives had worked very well for 3 years and suddenly they were “gone” without any new software being added. Therefore, it almost had to be a register problem. What was not pointed out in the original post was that my
“A” drive also was no longer available at that same time. It’s a poser, isn’t it!Thanks for your help

That is strange as my P3 with XP Pro has the same registry reference. On the P3, I looked at the entries under ‘class’ and they are all to do with hardware.
The entry starting 4D36E969-E325 is something to do with Floppy Disk Controllers. What happened with me was I was installing software after upgrading a Vista machine to Win 7. The last thing I did was to install my burner software from a DVD. It call for a re-boot and then I found I had no DVD drive.

AskWoody LoungerDecember 9, 2009 at 9:04 pm #1190190There’s a numer of things you can try here, but the first thing listed is Riley’s suggestion. Are you sure you didn’t miss that key?

AskWoody LoungerDecember 10, 2009 at 12:51 pm #1190340Sometimes the simplest things solve the greatest problems. At the suggestion of my son-in-law, I ran Registry Medic and allowed it to repair all the problems. EUREKA!!! Everything now works. I run registry cleaners on a regular basis, but apparently they were not doing the proper job. Many thanks to all of you who offered suggestions. All of the suggestions were good and showed you care.
