We have dusted off and run Windows 10 updates on a 12-year-old Lenovo ThinkPad Edge 14 laptop.

The PC is no longer supported by Lenovo so they do not offer driver updates.

Out of curiosity, we ran CCleaner’s Driver Updater app on the system. It identified 17 drivers that are available including:

    • Audio (1),
    • Bluetooth (1),
    • Realtex Bluetooth 4.2 Adapter,
    • Connectivity (2),
    • Mouse (1),
    • Storage (3), and
    • System (8).

We have no experience using CCleaner’s Driver Updater and are interested in finding out if other have used it and does it work?

I would not use it.  I don’t trust any driver updater other than from the vendor itself.

I used this Lenovo webpage for an older laptop….using the Windows 8 or Vista drivers (last known updates) and Windows 10 works fine.

When I go to the Lenovo download page, you mention, the most recent driver updates are from 2013.  The PC was updated to Windows 10 from Windows 7 post 2013.

Some of the drivers identified for the 12-year-old Lenovo ThinkPad Edge 14 by CCleaner are more recent and were possibility developed to support Windows 10.

The CCleaner drivers (release dates are in parenthesis) include:

        • Audio
          • Intel Display Audio (26.04.2018)
          • Realtek High Definition Audio (17.08.2021)
        • Connectivity
          • Realtek PCle GbE Family Controller (14.10.2022)

          • Wireless Keyboard Filter Device (10.09.2020)
        • Mouse
          • Microsoft USB Dual Receiver Wireless Mouse (Mouse and Keyboard Center) (10.09.2020)

I am open to thoughts on how to update the ThinkPad’s drivers other than by using the offerings from CCleaner or Lenovo.

And is it worth updating the drivers at all?

The device OEM, ie, Intel, Realtek.
You will need the the device info: sources such as Device Manager, msinfo32.exe (run in Win), Belarc Advisor, Speccy, etc

My opinion on this, is based on what you are planning to use “this” laptop for Kathy?

Likely some of the updates you may be seeing are for security issues, and others for compatibility with versions of Windows 10.  Anyway, if the laptop works with Windows 10 using the last known drivers from Lenovo, then why update the drivers?  Again they could be for security, but perhaps that’s not an issue.  Like I pointed out, I’m using a Lenovo laptop that’s even older.  Many of the drivers are Vista or Windows 8 and it works just fine with Windows 10 22H2 and I’m not at all worried about the drivers…..security or otherwise.  However, I would never download or use drivers from a 3rd party.

Like others have pointed out, I’m having fun testing out Windows 10 versions and eventually I’ll be moving to Linux Mint on the same laptop.  It’s got a lot of life left.

I am not sure about other options besides CCleaner and Lenovo, but maybe you could consider being a “Tester” for yourself and us, by creating a full complete System Image Backup using your favorite Backup Software Program, (personally I prefer Macrium Reflect Free), and then using the CCleaner Driver Updater just to see how it performs, (good or bad?). Your 12 year old Lenovo probably is not your most important computer, so that if damage is done, hopefully the SIB backup can be restored to before CCleaner Driver Updates were done. This of course will be a Grand Experiment, which might be “Dangerous” so it is understandable if you would choose not to be a: guinea pig? sacrificial lamb? beta-tester? – If you do decide to be a scientist experimenter for us, please and thank you, for posting your results for all of us to learn. I think most people avoid the CCleaner Driver Updater because no one is sure how it would perform. You, Kathy, could go where no person has gone before, a true explorer, Fearless Kathy you will become known, and highly appreciated.

An alternative is to let the sleeping dog lie.

The time to work under the computers hood and cost of a drive to use for a clone together are  probably not worth it.

But it is tempting to run the experiment.

        Stand by.

I have been using CCleaner for years. I have used it in conjunction with Microsoft on HP’s, Asus, and Lenovo’s for years. No problems at all.
