    Hi,

Has anyone come across this problem?

I have tried on several occasions to upgrade my Windows XP Pro to Service Pack 2 by using the downloaded distributable package rather than via Windows/Microsoft Update. I’m doing a clean install on a formatted drive, and I’d prefer to stay offline to avoid various nasties until I have SP2 in place and have the Windows Firewall running. I go online during my initial Windows install only long enough for activation.

I’ve tried a few times to use previously downloaded SP2 files, but I invariably get a message partway through the extraction that the file is corrupt. So I borrowed a Microsoft SP2 disk from work. It extracts fine, but then during the install process it always hangs up at some point saying that it can’t find a certain file from the temp folder set up. It’s always a different file, and frustratingly, I always see the file there in the temp folder. But the install process will not recognize it. Then as a final insult, the uninstall process leaves me with a message that it didn’t completely uninstall properly, and that Windows might be damaged. End result, I wipe the hard drive again, and start from scratch.

There is no problem with my hard drive that I can tell – it’s fine with everything else. I’d like to get SP2 installed so I can move forward and install the rest of my software. Any suggestions? Is there a way to do multiple extractions of the SP2 files, so if I get this problem again, there are other folders I can get the process to look at for whatever file is not installing properly at the time?

    Many thanks!

    John
