• Can’t start IE normally (IE 6.0.2600)

    Since a while, I am not able to run IE by pressing its icon. In fact, it starts up but then it hangs. The only way to quit this situation is by pressing ctrl-alt-del and end the task. The strange thing is that I can start IE from Windows Explorer. I tried to reinstall IE but with the same result.
    Is there a way to remove IE and reinstall it? Or, has anybody experienced similar problems? Any suggestions are welcome.

      The shortcut buttons are sometimes special programs rather than ordinary shortcuts. If you compare the command strings for the various icons (quick launch, desktop, start menu, Windows Explorer), can you see any difference?

        The start menu toolbar shortcut properties simply says the path is “C:Program FilesInternet ExplorerIEXPLORE.EXE” and refers to the location C:WINDOWSApplication DataMicrosoftInternet ExplorerQuick Launch. If I click this shortcut button IE ‘hangs’. If I start up the Windows Explorer and type in the www address in the address command line or choose internet sites via Favorites, then it works fine. I don’t understand. If I then go to e.g. Woody’s Lounge and click an url in a post, then I have the same ‘hanging’ problem.

          Hi
          Is the title of your folder ‘Program Files’ or ProgramFiles’? If the former, then put the path in the shortcut in double quotes. If the latter, make sure it’s exactly the same in the path in Properties. Do not change the name of the folder from what it is at present. Worth a try.

          I wonder if your home page is set to something that just does not want to load. Is the logo in the upper right hand corner moving when it opens by clicking on the Quick Launch icon?

          Try modifying the icon’s properties to read “C:Program FilesInternet ExplorerIEXPLORE.EXE” -nohome. Then type an address in the address bar. If that works, then you need to change your home page in Tools – Internet Options.

            Thank you all for your suggestions. I tried everything but it doesn’t seem to change much. I really wonder if there is a possibility to remove internet explorer and reinstall it without the necessity to reinstall windows.

              Hans;

              It sounds like you need to “repair” your installation of IE. The repair process varies from OS to OS, but generally you will open your Control Panel, fire up “Add/Remove Programs” and on the Windows Components tab you will find Internet Explorer. From there you can remove/reinstall or repair.

              If you are running WindowsXP, you will need to fire up a Command window (on the Run menu simply type command.com and run that) and then enter the following command: sfc /scannow.

              I believe you saved me. I removed all shortcuts from the command bar, repaired IE (which I couldn’t find easily as it is not in the list simply as Internet Explorer (and I have a huge list due to a teenage son who downloads all kind of software from the net) but found it as Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 and internet worktools) as you suggested and made a new shortcut and now everything seems to work as before.
              Thank you very much.
