STILL can’t save an image directly into any image folder in FP. I’ve tried a number of things including reducing the number of images in the folder though there weren’t a large number. I’ve posted this before and it was deemed unworthy of futher consideration.

If I ‘massage’ a .jpg file, for example, using MSPhotoDraw V2 and save it to an image folder in FP it is there but it doesn’t show as in existence in the list when editing with FP. What I have to do is use Explorer to open the folder on my hard drive where the image resides — the same image folder showing within FP! — and drag the desired image to the directory. If it’s already there it wonders if I want to overwrite. “Sure.”

I’ve re-installed FP. I’ve done the tried and true Detect and Repair (twice) and I’ve even agreed to take my wife to the movies. Nothing works. An annoyance to be sure.

I always “import” into a web (in FrontPage 2000). As you point out, FP seems to have its own directory list independent of Windows. Once the file is in there, I can edit with Notepad or replace using Windows Explorer, but I get it recognized the first time by using Import.

The failure of FrontPage to show files in the images of Folder List is new to my experience. It’s always been my practice to save images as, for example, C:/myweb/mysite/images/mypic.jpg when editing is complete. That goes through several versions of FP.

If I do that now, I can’t drag them, using Explorer, to that folder because the file — though it doesn’t show on Folder List — is already there and XP doesn’t like the idea of dragging a file onto itself, for some reason. That’s NEW, because it was working in the old way until sudently now showing the files that exist in the list.

It’s a puzzlement but my workaround is to save the image or group of images slated for a given page in a temporary location and then drag them as a selected set into that mythical folder above. Works but is not convenient or efficient by any stretch of imagination.

I need to clarify the process you’re using because it’s not clear to me. I’m skeptical that it’s Frontpage that is a problem, at least until there is more information. I’ve not seen an Explorer error when overwriting into Frontpage this way. I was only able to reproduce this behavior when dragging the item onto itself, or in another open Explorer window. If I drag a folder named ~pix into my image path on the hard drive (F:My DocumentsWebsimages) it appears in the Frontpage file listing To offer a fix we need to first understand the problem completely. Can you answer the following questions?

Where, on the disk, is your website located? Right click on the topmost folder in the Frontpage Explorer listing, and select Properties. Write the location down (you can also triple-click on the location text and it will highlight, which you can copy with Ctrl+C and paste later). Now, copy a test file into the iimages location in your website. To make sure it works, make sure Frontpage is closed and open a command prompt to copy manually:

          copy "c:My DocumentsMy Picturestestpicture.jpg" "c:(website location)images"

Open Frontpage. Is testpicture.jpg in the images folder in your web?

When you are dragging and dropping, do you drag from a Windows Explorer window (Explorer.exe) and drop it onto the folder listing in Frontpage? When I try to perform that operation and the images/folders don’t exist already, I see a brief import box as Frontpage processes the information. If I do the same thing a second time, I am prompted with a dialog similar to the attached – nothing about copying onto itself. What happens if you drag and drop to the same location twice, from Explorer to Frontpage?

            Mark,

Mahalo plenty for your post but I’m not following.

Please clarify in the first sentence of the second paragraph your “FrontPage Explorer.” Do you mean “FrontPage Folder List?” Maybe that’s where I’m falling off the trolley.

            Thank you

            Hawai`i Bill,

Bill, here’s another $0.02 worth: My experience tells me that when FP opens a web, it builds a database of all the files extant at that time. Dragging a file from Windows Explorer into FP works, ie., FP incorporates the draggee into the DB. However, if you open Windows Explorer behinnd FP’s back, so to speak, and drag a file from some folder to the FP folders, FP doesnt see what youre doing. My solution is to add files using the Import facility, or, if FP is open, I close the web and reopen it to rebuild the database.

Let me try this one more time and more clearly.

In the folder holding my web site for editing before publishing to the web server, I have image files that do not display when that same folder is displayed within FrontPage2002’s Folder List.

Those that do not display were likely saved to the subject image folder after editing in, for example, MS PhotoDraw 2000 v.2. IN THE PAST all files within that folder displayed in the FP Folder List. About two months ago or less something happened and that is no longer the case. IF I save a file to some folder other than the image folder and then drag it directly into the Folder List in FP then it displays.

How can it be, in other words, that MS FrontPage doesn’t display all files on a disk folder in its FPFolder List?

              Thank you,

              Bill Eger

It looks to me like your FP site is hmm … let us say … “slightly hosed”, so perhaps at last i understand the problem(?). Whatever “happened” 2 months ago pranged the site database, to use the technical terms. The only way i know to “fix” this is to create a new site and import all the files from the old site. Either import or drag them. The drawback to this is that you have to redo the navigation, which may be a bear if the site is large. Make sure you use the same folder names so all the links outside the navigation bars stil work.

since I dont have complete confidence in this “solution”, I would wait to see what others have to say about my diagnosis.

              Hi Bill,

I do mean the same thing by the Frontpage folder list and the Frontpage Explorer. Two different names for the same view. Have you tried the experiment that I suggested?

              Mark,

Part of being an old man is that every now and then it’s necessary to back away. I’m having to take it easy for a few days here.

But I don’t want you to think I’m ungrateful for your efforts and as soon as I can, I’ll be back in the traces and working on
              your suggestions.

Thank you or, as we say in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, Mahalo!

              Bill
