I have Office 2000, and at some stage downloaded SR1. Recently if you try to use the Office Assistant, Word, and other Office applications, say ‘There was a problem starting the Office Assistant. Would you like to try restarting it’. If I click Yes, it tries to reinstall it and then says ‘The Office Assistant could not be started. Please repair the Assistant by running Office 2000 set up and selecting Repair Office 2000’. So I do that, using the original Office 2000 CDs, restart the PC and still get the same error messages. Any ideas? (Personally I hate the assistant, but other members of the family think differently.)

I take your point, but if this component of Office suddenly won’t run, which other one will be next, and how will I rectify it?

My reply was not serious, of course. I’m afraid I don’t know a solution.

You might try uninstalling the Office Assistant feature (Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, Microsoft Office 2000, Modify), then reinstalling it.

You could try a possible resolution in this order:
            1. Go to start | run
windows 2000/XP: and type sfc /scannow (system file checker to replace bad system files – it may be a bad Oleaut32.dll
            windows 98: and type sfc
2, Next go to Windows update site and update your OS
            3. Now try the maint. mode repair again from control panel.
Did you run setup from disk 2 also? If so try inserting disk 2 – office tools | Office assistant and opt to ‘run all from my computer’
