• Can’t Open Add/Remove Programs

    In Control Panel, suddenly cannot open Add/Remove Programs. Message is approximately (I’m away from my own computer now) that file hsta.exe cannot be found. File search confirms that.

      I don’t have a Windows 2000 box any more, but I don’t find hsta.exe in my XP Pro’s WINDOWS directory. A Google search for hsta.exe finds nothing. Could the file in question have been MSHTA.EXE?!

      If John is correct in his supposition about the name, I have three copies on my W2K installation, as shown. (I searched for *ta.exe hence the other non-relevent file). Perhaps you can find a copy in dllcache or …

      Do you have a file called appwiz.cpl
      in your C:windows directorysystem32
      directory? If so, what happens if you double-click on that?

      Also, you may want to try the following from a command prompt:
      sfc /purgecache
      and then
      sfc /scannow

      HTH.

      NB: You may need your Windows disk to run these successfully.
