AskWoody LoungerJanuary 7, 2010 at 1:05 pm #1196169My default answer to this kind of issue would be virus/malware scans – can you provide us with more information though, such as machine type (desktop, laptop), manufacturer, model, and age?
For your scans, I would recommend Malwarebytes and bitdefender’s free online scanner.

AskWoody LoungerJanuary 8, 2010 at 12:36 pm #1196703Doc,
When I go to download Unlocker, I get the warning below. Any idea what this is about?John,
Is that message from your AV program? Or your security settings?
I’ve used unlocker for a LONG time and it’s a great one. I just tried to DL it from Doc’s link and did so OK without any warning message. -

I’ve used unlocker for a LONG time and it’s a great one. I just tried to DL it from Doc’s link and did so OK without any warning message.I went to Doc’s site too and had no issue. The crest shows it is a McAfee Site Advisor rating, but if you Google
ccollomb.free.fr it will show Google ccollomb.free.fr results
and Web of Trust shows it yellow, and if you are using IE it will show up RED as per the 2nd result. That site isn’t related to the download link that Doc put up that I can see.Hey Jude

AskWoody LoungerJanuary 8, 2010 at 1:21 pm #1196709“Is that message from your AV program? Or your security settings?”
The message is generated by the IE8 Smart Screen Filter. I’ve used Unlocker in the past as well, but when I click on the “Unlocker” link in Doc’s post (on the File-Hippo site), it attempts to connect to the download site and that’s when the message is generated. I think I’ll just ignore the warning and continue.

AskWoody LoungerJanuary 8, 2010 at 1:33 pm #1196715Hmmm
OK – I proceeded to the site (I turned off the Smart Screen Filter and disregarded the warning) and this is what I got.
At that page, I also got a pop up warning from Norton Internet Security which directed me to this page for a report.
Any other suggestions?
That’s what I got too…try File Hippo Unlocker 1.8.8
Over to the right is the D/L file 215 KBtry Unlocker CNet then click Download Now

Hey JudeTried the CNet link and that worked. But why all the previous warnings? There must be something amiss with the site as both MS and Norton generate warnings.
Just went back to the FileHippo site and clicked on the “Download Latest Version” link (on the right) and it works as well. Clicking on the “Unlocker” link immediately below the “Unlocker 1.8.8” title generates the warnings again.
Strange!

AHA~!~!~!~! I just did what you did and got the same result. Clicking on the D/L link BELOW the File Hippo DOES INDEED take you to that weird page….however, IF you go to the RIGHT of the page and click THAT D/L link you are taken to the correct site. SO they have a bug on their site….hmmmmm I see what you saw tho…so that ‘splains it
P.S. is there a way to report bugs or mislinks to FileHippo???????

AskWoody MVPJanuary 8, 2010 at 1:59 pm #1196730Checkout the reason McAfee gives.
unlocker1.4.exe installed the following programs on our PC:
Generic PWS.y trojan Search Threat Library
How does it modify my system?*
The following programs were registered in our Add/Remove Programs:
Unlocker 1.4
In our tests, unlocker1.4.exe did not make any changes to the system registry.
In our tests, unlocker1.4.exe did not make any changes to the hard drive.
Other information* The title could not be determined.
* URL of the download publisher: hxxp://ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker/old/
* URL of the download: hxxp://ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker/old/unlocker1.4.exe
* Filename: unlocker1.4.exe
* File size: 78276
* Full checksum (MD5): 0b84010b124871d41b1aa2a27207a470
* SiteAdvisor Program ID: 5238484
* SiteAdvisor last tested this download: 2009 May
* SiteAdvisor last verified this link: 2009 JulyMy bold to point out the futility of relying on the free version of Siteadvisor for anything (I think there is a pay product that is alleged to be more up-to-date).
They flagged this download based on the tool used to create or compress it is my guess = false positive.
The main reason that any úseful’anti-malware tool site gets red-flagged is because there are people who are losing money – the ****** that create and propagate the exploits that these files help to rid us of – it’s the malware authors and their agents that try to give these ‘good’sites a bad name on any peer-reviewed sites like Siteadvisor, Symantec, WOT, etc..
But I don’t have a recent link for Unlocker, sorry.

AskWoody LoungerJanuary 8, 2010 at 2:07 pm #1196734I do NOT rely on SiteAdvisor for anything any longer after I became aware that their testing can be over a year old and is reliant upon advertisers as you so succinctly pointed out. But, in the case of the mis-directed link, I do see what happened and I got the same result–see above–but I’m glad the CNet site worked and the original link that Doc put up works as long as you click to the RIGHT and NOT directly UNDERNEATH it….weird….
I do however, use WOT and that has been alot more reliable as it is consumer rated and oriented. Just remember when you visit sites that you know are safe and always use w/o issue to get in on the rating game. It’s what helps make the internet a safer place.

AskWoody MVPJanuary 8, 2010 at 2:12 pm #1196735Majorgeeks hosts this file too – they’re probably the best non-author site to download from – they actually test the files that they host, any that aren’t clean or fit for the purpose don’t get listed.

I second what you said about Majorgeeks and I use that site alot too. It seems that there was some mis-link on that original page Doc listed which had nothing to do whatsoever with his link….almost like it got hijacked to take you to another page…. thanks for mentioning MG.

MajorGeeks is a good site but then so is FileHippo.
Any site can get hacked occasionally and sometimes it takes a while for the problem to be recognized by the host. In this case, I don’t think it was a matter of a bad download file but more of a bug or hack at that particular spot. -
