Suddenly my computer (Computer A) cannot map a network drive to Computer B. Computer A is XP Pro and Computer B is Windows 2000 Server, and they are members of a workgroup, not a domain. This occurs whether I try to connect to Computer B as myself or as the administrator. I tested three other computers and had no problem mapping a drive to Computer B. In addition, I can successfully map a drive from Computer A to Computer C, so it seems to be a problem specifically with the relationship between Computer A and Computer B. If I try this in Windows Explorer, the password is highlighted as if it is incorrect. I thought I might have a keyboard problem, so I typed both my password and the administrator password into Notepad to make sure that what I thought I was typing was actually being entered, then copied and pasted those passwords into the password box. When I issue the NET USE command, I receive error 1326: unknown user name or password.

To resolve the problem, here’s what I’ve tried so far:

    1. Restarted Computer B.
    2. Did a system restore on Computer A to one month ago.
    3. Uninstalled and reinstalled the Client for Microsoft Networks on Computer A.
    4. Disabled the Trend Micro firewall on Computer A.

    What else might I try?

Make sure the username and password you are logged in as on the XP box are the same on the Windows 2000 server. Even if the share is open to everyone, if the username you are using exists on both systems, and the passwords are different, it will not connect.

Nathan, the user names and passwords are the same on both systems. My user name works from three other systems on which it does not exist (using the Connect Using a Different User Name function). After working for years, it suddenly stopped working from my PC, even though there were no apparent changes to the PC.

Please go through Troubleshooting file shares on a home network » Windows Secrets Lounge and see if that helps.

This problem went away on its own. It began the Monday after the switch to daylight savings time. It disappeared the Monday after the original date for the daylight savings switch. Nothing I did in the interim had any effect, and the computer had the correct time and time zone during that period.

      Thanks for the update.

Do you have all the Windows time zone updates installed?
