A few days ago I installed Mint 19.2 (Cinnamon) to dual boot on a Win 7 machine. The installation seemed to work fine; I can boot into either operating system, Win 7 has the same functionality after the Mint installation as before, and the programs that come with Mint 19.2 (Firefox, Libre Office, etc.) all work fine.

I have been unable to install Opera on the Mint 19.2 side of the computer. After failing to find Opera in the Synaptic Package Manager and on the Software Manager (both are part of the Mint installation), I went to the Opera website and tried to install the Debian Opera Package, which package is the default for “your detected operating system”. When I try to install the downloaded file, everything seems to go well up through a notification that “all package dependencies are satisfied”. About 30 seconds after that I get a pop-up window that says the following:

“An Unhandlable Error Occurred. There seems to be a programming error in aptdaemon, the software that allows you to install/remove software and perform other package related tasks. Details: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken.”

I get the same messages if I try to directly install Opera from the website (without first downloading it). Firefox seems to be working fine, and my internet connection seems to work fine. I’ve tried to install about 10 times at various times of the day, all to no avail.

Prior to my installation attempts with Opera, I tried to install vlc-plugin-fluidsynth from the Software Manager and got the same Unhandlable Error message as above on my first try. But I immediately tried the installation again and it worked.

About three months ago I successfully installed Opera on another computer with Mint 19.2 as the only operating system and encountered no issues of any kind; the same for installation of vlc-plugin-fluidsynth.

I’m at a loss as to what to try next. There are instructions on the Opera website for installing a snap (snapd?) Opera package, but I don’t yet know enough about that kind of package to make an informed decision. Seems like it ought to work, but….

Thanks for any suggestions folks might have.

I did a quick check and couldn’t find any reference to Opera. It may have been removed due to the company collecting/selling user info. As for .deb files there is a program called Eddy that acts as a gui for downloading and fixing dependencies (IIRC) but I haven’t seen it offered in Mint yet.

Check the reddit subforums they can be helpful the official Mint forums too – although I haven’t signed up there yet.

Did it prompt for a password to install the program before it failed?

Is it Gdebi that is trying to install the program?

You could try installing via the command line, by typing sudo apt install xxxxx.deb, where xxxx.deb is replaced by the name of the file.  This must be done from the directory where the file is located.  That might generate some error messages that could be helpful, or it could work!

I’ve never seen this error, so I am not really sure what would fix it.

Well, this is quite strange, but I just successfully installed Opera doing nothing differently than I had done before.

To answer your questions, I was prompted for a password on this last attempt. On all my previous attempts, I got the “Unhandlable Error” message before I could even be prompted for a password (in other words I wasn’t prompted for a password). And yes, when I right clicked on the Opera.deb file (it’s actual name is opera-stable_67.0.3575.53_amd64.deb), the default selection is (and was) “open with GDebi Package Installer”.

Based on the “Unhandlable Error” message I got, the only thing I can think of is that some request timed out, or that a server somewhere was down, but that’s just pure speculation on my part. I’m always bugged a bit when I don’t know why something went wrong.

In any case I’m glad it finally installed. Thanks for your help. (And yes, the error message really did spell the word as unhandlable, not as unhandleable)

I’m glad it works, even if we don’t know why it didn’t before!
