Foolishly, I allowed my Surface Pro to update today’s MS patches.  KB5019959 x64 installs up to 35% then produces error 0x80073701.  I ran dism cleanup (as well as the Windows Update and MS Store troubleshooters) but no success.  Any thoughts out there?

If you are running any third-party AntiVirus, or scanner like Malwarebytes Free, set them to NOT start when Windows starts. Restart (not shutdown/power up) your computer so they are not running.

I am assuming your computer reverted to the previous Build and is bootable. If that is not the case, please so report. Otherwise, try this:

Check system integrity. In an elevated command prompt, run the following:
      DISM /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
      sfc /scannow

Reset the datastore. In an elevated command prompt, run the following:
      net stop wuauserv
      net stop bits
      net stop cryptSvc
      net stop msiserver
      Ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
      net start wuauserv
      net start bits
      net start cryptSvc
      net start msiserver

Download wushowhide.diagcab to your desktop and run it. Hide any updates you don’t want to install. Rerun wushowhide to verify only the updates you want are available.

      Go to Settings App\Windows Update
When Windows Update rescans, you should be back to the pre-November update state. Proceed as you would normally (wait a while to install?)

Reset your Anti-malware apps until you are ready to install. Disable them again during updating

Your above post is a very clear and concise set of instructions for troubleshooting Windows Update errors, @PKCano and is much appreciated.

Perhaps you could consider making it into an AKB sticky for the benefit of forum users for future reference when these situations may unfortunately arise.

I appreciate this advice.  While I’m now back to pre-November, of course, I still can’t install KB5019959 x64, the November update.  I’ve set it to wait.

I am also unable to install KB5019959. I’m running a Dell desktop win 10 Pro 21h2. The other November updates installed fine, but KB5019959 fails to install.  Past updates have installed with no issues after waiting for Susan’s OK.  I usually go to windows update and choose to install and things work fine.  This time it keeps saying it failed and Windows will try later.  I’ve rebooted and retried and get the same message.  I’ve gone online looking for resolutions but none have worked.  I’ve done diskclean, run scannow, disabled/uninstalled my antivirus. Did not run DISM.

I have tried going to the Windows update catalog and installing manually and I just get a message that says it failed with no explanation.  From within Windows updates when I click retry it will get to 100% installing but eventually I get this message:

“There were some problems installing updates, but we’ll try again later. If you keep seeing this and want to search the web or contact support for information, this may help: (0x800f081f)”

Some of the possible solutions I see online seem too aggressive. Updates have loaded fine in the past, there haven’t been any major changes to my system.  The most annoying part is because this one update won’t load I am unable to pause future updates which could mean other “not ready” updates could get installed before I’d want them.

      Any suggestions would be appreciated.

      thanks
