Windows 8.1 is working fine and I’ve decided to wait a month or two before moving up to Windows 10. (I’ve been following 10 previews as a Windows Insider)

I get the list of weekly patches, but when I tell Windows to download and install them, after they are downloaded it starts downloading Windows 10. When I click on Cancel Download (for Windows 10), I can no longer see any of the patches and nothing gets installed.

Is there away to put the Windows 10 download aside and keep 8.1 current with the new patches?

Have you tried right clicking on the Win 10 update and selecting Hide ?

Windows 10 update is not on the list so I can’t right click to hide it. It says Total selected: 1 optional update selected (2,712.6) Mb but it is not on the list of optional updates.

From the size of that update, it sounds as if it is for Win 10.

Is it not listed anywhere ?

My Win 10 update clearly said that it was Win 10.

          I’m having the same problem:
On the windows update display, it says “Select updates you want to install”
Below, follows a list of update options, all un-checked.
At the bottom of the page it says “total selected: 1 optional update”
Note: none of the visible boxes are checked and the windows 10 upgrade is not shown
and there are no hidden updates.

You nailed it! Thanks very much.

I looked at the many patches that were available, but didn’t notice there was one hiding in there for the Win10 upgrade, just not seeing what was in plain sight.

The Win8 to Win8.1 Notebook I cleaned up yesterday had that in the Optional list, also was trying to install before the Critical/Optional, had to Uncheck it to avoid problems. Later on, after the other 8.1 updates, it installed just fine.

Before you wonder "Am I doing things right," ask "Am I doing the right things?"

There was a time when I’d happily install every update that MS issued but at the rate they have been pushing the Telemetry and ease of upgrade updates, I now look at every one and hide those I don’t want or need.

I’d already done that although found the Temp Installation Files by accident, but guessed what they were for and added them to the list for deletion.

Far easier is to create a reg file using this (or add it to the registry manually):
      Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

;Created by Vishal Gupta for AskVG.com

      [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREPoliciesMicrosoftWindowsGWX]
      “DisableGWX”=dword:00000001

Reboot after adding it to the registry and the GWX won’t bother you, anymore!

In addition to my 8,1 machine, I also have a Win7 machine that won’t upgrade to Win10 because the video isn’t compatible. I hoped the fix the Davis McCarn suggested ( HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREPoliciesMicrosoftWindowsGWX] “DisableGWX”=dword:00000001
) would get rid of the constant upgrade nags.

But on this Win7 machine there is no Policies line in the registry for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWARE. Instead, I went to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsGWX and then removed the entire GWX section.
After rebooting, the Win10 white icon was no longer there and GWX is no longer in the notification tray customize list.

Windows has separate windows for Optional and Important.

In the main notification window does it list Optional as well as Important ?

Clicking on Optional will give you the window with that update to uncheck.

I realize most of you don’t have time to interrupt you business and try this, but I’m curious if any have decided to revert back to the previous operating system. If you upgrade – you get that as a choice in the recovery section. So far, I have always done upgrades so folks can change their minds(within the month limit). I haven’t actually reverted anyone yet, but upgrading was faster than a lot of the solutions put here in this thread. Win10 seems just as fast on Win7 as Win8.1 as far as I’ve witnessed. So far there have been very few problems, other than files don’t always survive from Win7, but applications do! Since we always back up before dong the upgrade the file loss is no big deal.

          JC,
two of my customers actually had to revert back to their respective previous OS. One was Win7, one case was Win8.
Both times I started the process for them; both are very happy because everything works exactly as before the upgrade.
On the very well equipped Win7 machine (12GB) reverting took about two hours, on the relatively weakly powered Win8 machine (4GB) it took about 2 hrs 50 minutes.
Both customers encountered no problems whatsoever.

Just thought I’d come back and announce on of my clients finally had enough and went back to Win7 only to find out Windows backup is broken now – and the only fix listed on TechNet is to reinstall Win7!! Fortunately we made an image, and most of the daily backups are there.
