Can't find Software

I downloaded some software to update my HP printer and discovered that the software caused more problems than I had before. So I undid the installation but now, every time I turn on the printer I get the message that the software is trying to install and I also get a Microsoft message that the software has not passed Windows Logo testing… I’ve scoured my computer (with the printer on and off) but can’t find the location of the software installer. Anyone have any ideas??

Downloaded apps are usually in the Temp Internet files after download unless you specify a different location. I always set up a Download folder at the top level of my root drive and specify that folder whenever I download anything. MS has now put a Download folder in the UserName folder by default in Win 7, probably because of the complaints about the inability to find downloaded apps.

I would think if you clean up the Temp Internet Files through IE Internet Options/ Browsing History, this should solve your problem although the exact path in XP escapes me right now.

How exactly did you undo the installation?

Reinstall “the software”, boot, then uninstall it with a program like Revo or via the control panel applet.
Make sure that “the software” does not have a startup or system tray entry, disable those prior to uninstallation.
Never uninstall software by using System Restore.

Thanks all for your useful replies. But nothing helped. No matter what I tried, including all the suggestions, the software remained and tried to install every time I turned the printer on. I finally uninstalled the original software that came with the printer and reinstalled the original software from the disk and that seems to have taken care of the problem. But I’d sure love to know where that bad update was hiding.

If your are using Firefox look in “my documents” for a file called downloads
