I recently installed a free 30 day trial of Internet Download Manager (IDM). It worked well but at the end of the period I decided I didn’t want to purchase the full thing. I ignored it for a while but it kept coming up with a nag dialog box telling me it had expired. If I tried to download anything the same thing would happen and it then whisked me off to a ‘purchase me’ web site. I can not bypass this even pressing the usual keys (Alt) to restore browser control. If I uninstall IDM then IE6 is still unable to download anything. I communicated with the IDM support but all they sent was a copy of their uninstall routine which I already had. Nevertheless, I tried it but still no joy.

I could try a restore but I have had a lot of updates since then.

Incidently I don’t know if there is a connection but SP2 will not install properly either – I thought it might fix the problem brickwall .

Does anyone know if there is a fix for this or is a roll-back the only solution?

What specifically happens when after the uninstall? Still re-directs you? What error do you get with the SP-2 install? Too late now, but IMO if you have a broadband connection a d/l manager is a waste of machine and money.

When IDM expires, its icons disappear from the system tray and from the desktop, etc. If you try to download anything an IDM dialog box appears and when you close it you immediately go to their sales pitch web site – annoying huh?. I decided to uninstall it and I get the dialog as per attachment. The SP2 error I get is also in the attachment. The automatic updates keeps trying to install SP2 but the result is the same although I note that I have a bunch of new security icons and the firewall icon in control panel. The windows version still says SP1 though. confused3

I would try the simple fix first and restore back to before you installed the trial and then install SP2. Installing SP2 will restore any and all updates you may or may not have installed since you installed the trial software. HTH.

Unfortunately I can’t do the restore anymore as the PC seized after the last attempt to install SP2. It kept re-booting before getting to the Windows screen. Only cure was to do a recovery (an in-place repair). Everything is back to normal now except lost all the restore points. IE6 still refuses to download anything. I will be getting hold of a CD rom copy of SP2 next week so I live in hope that I can proceed from there.

Just curious, but, did you use the “Complete” option or the “Default” option when you removed IDM ??? My suspicion here is that you used the “Default” option and are now dealing with the resultant remnants of the program interacting with your system.

I would first try reinstalling IDM and then removing it using the “Complete” option. If this doesn’t work or the program will not let you reinstall the trial version (after all, you have already had your 30 days of fun at their expense rofl) and the support team at Tonec Inc. (the company behind IDM) can’t or won’t help you, you may be left with registry editing as the only solution short of a reformat and reinstall.

It doesn’t look like the CD version of SP2 is going to resolve that error. I’ll run a Google or two on the error and see what comes back.
