• Can’t customise outlook today (2000)

HI guys, I had to install office after my hard drive decided to loose a cluster. Now I have reinstalled office 2000 and setting up outlook, but I can’t customize my outlook today-the link won’t do anything.

Also are there any suggestions as how I can restore my custom toolbars?
Thanks.

Outlook toolbars are stored in a file called outcmd.dat, which typically lives in:

C:Documents and SettingsApplication DataMicrosoftOutlook

If you’re looking for the Outlook bar (the one with the shortcuts), it’s in a file with a name like .FAV in the same folder.

(This is on Windows 2000, in Windows 98 these could be stashed away under c:Windows)

Not sure about customizing Outlook Today. There were some threads during the past year on doing major overhauls; maybe some of them would help?

Thanks J!
My toolbars are restored saving me lots of time. I do have win 98 and the folder is in windows/ application data/ outlook.
By customizing outlook today, I just want to change the page style (winter) and the messages that are displayed, I click on the ‘customize outlook today’ but nothing happens. I tried detect and repair but that did nothing.

Try Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 234707 : “OL2000: No Option To Customize Outlook Today With Winter Style”

Basically:
SYMPTOMS
If you are using the Winter style of Outlook Today, you may not see an option to customize Outlook Today.
CAUSE
Unlike other Outlook Today styles, the link to customize the Winter style of Outlook Today is at the lower-right corner of the Outlook Today page. If your page contains many items, you may have to scroll down to see the Customize Outlook Today link. If you are using a lower screen resolution you may have to increase the resolution to a higher value to see the link.
Thanks Leif, but I am trying to convert to the winter style. I have the link at the top of the default style page but it does not do anything.

I tried to restore the registry from my previous windows installation and it worked BUT I had an .INF error so the registry could not be used.

Perhaps I have to start over with a fresh outlook .pst file and transfer all files.

When you say it does not do anything, it makes me think that your Internet security settings may have become too strict. (Outlook Today page is a web page stored in your My Computer security zone.) Do you get the effect of the “raised button”?

• #671523

I tried the security settings as well, nothing helped.. No the button did not rise. I found that the fresh install of win 98 did not perform well either so I reformatted and did a fresh install.

To add insult to injury, the full disk backup cannot be used as it is corrupt for some reason, so I have now lost my toolbar settings but the other important files were transferred to the secondary hard drive-all except a few windows files, which of course are not available now. But lol I made another backup previously so I lucked out this time.

All in all the fresh office install #2 works just fine. One problem id with the Intelimouse software, which won

OH great! It

Interestingly, one of our systems came down with the same problem. IT could not find an explanation (it was cloned from a standard image) and gave up on it due to higher priorities.

If you’re familiar with the registry editor, see if there is anything possibly related under the Policy or Policies keys (too late tonight to go into details). Maybe something like NoCustomizeOutlookToday, etc.

If you have the time, interest and need, there are several threads in this forum that discuss Outlook Today customisation. You will need to trawl through manually while Search is AWOL. From memory the ones from earlier last year had the most useful links for anyone prepared to take on OL Today.

This article says it was “Last Reviewed May 12, 2003.” Whether it was first posted on that date, I don’t know, but it appears to be dead on:

Does it work?

Success! clapping Thank you jscher for your time and help. It looks like the security update responsible has reduced the functionality, but at least the registry work around did the trick.
