I’m trying to include a Visio flowchart in a Word document.

In Visio, I’ve tried using two methods (“Edit” “Copy Drawing” and “Select All” “Copy”) to get the drawing on the clipboard. No matter which way I do it, when I paste it into Word, the extreme left and right portions of the drawing are truncated.

Someone else had a copy of the Visio file and was able to copy it into a Word document (using the same versions of the software that I have). I then copied the object from her Word document and pasted it into my Word document. Success. But when I try to edit the Visio object or even use “Format Object” to change the way text wraps around it, I lose the right and left edges of the flowchart.

I’ve tried using “cropping” to extend the margins of the object; no luck. I’ve tried resizing the object; still no luck. I tried changing the flowchart in Visio so that the flowchart is far, far from any of the margins; again, no luck.

This is driving me mad. I’ve already wasted over two hours simply trying to copy a Visio drawing into a Word document. Can anyone help? Thanks!

How are you pasting the Visio file into Word? After using Edit> Select All then Ctrl+C to copy the object. Then I use Edit>Paste Special>Paste As Visio Project Drawing Object.
What did the other person do to get the paste file to work?

Originally, I used the keyboard shortcut for paste (Ctrl+V). I just tried it following your directions (Edit>Paste Special>Paste as Visio Project Drawing Object) and the same problem occurred (the left-most part of the left-most objects are cut off).

If I double-click on the object (as though to edit it using Visio while still in Word), the entire thing is visible. But when I click back into Word, the Visio drawing is truncated again.

The other person just used paste, probably from the toolbar.

Copying Visio objects and pasting them into Word is a strange art. There is no consistent method that gives reliable results.

When I had a problem like yours I solved it by creating a box with white background and no borders that was slightly larger than – and behind – my drawing. I then grouped everything on the Visio page and copied it. This then pasted into word with acceptable behaviour.

        WOO HOO! clapping

It worked! I wouldn’t have thought of your solution in a hundred years. Thanks!

I’m very happy to have a work-around, although I admit that the original problem still has me perplexed. But I promise not to obsess on it.

Insert the Visio drawing as an object then right click and Format object and select the layout you require. If you link to the file then it is easily editable.
