    Is there a known program similar to the old Nortons Utilities that can recover files from a floppy. Preferably free

      See if Floppy Recovery V-9.0 (free) works for you.

        A valuable lesson was learnt! I ran chkdsk /f on the disk it corrected errors but over wrote the critical file. I guess the iron is in the fire, it was a necessary file from the Australian Taxation Office and our method of submitting the BAS (Business Activity Statement).
        I will download both files as suggested, being an old boy scout I will be prepared.
