I have a new computer and am in the process of trying to get things I care about off the old one (Win98) and onto the new one (WinXP). I have a whole bunch of Postscript fonts on the old computer, several of which I have used in important documents. I cannot get the new computer to recognize these fonts. I have tried copying them onto a zip disk and moving them that way, and I have tried emailing them to myself and getting them that way. The font installer can’t recognize them as fonts, and Windows won’t let me just move them into the font folder because it tells me they are not recognizable fonts. I also tried saving the attached font from the email directly to the font folder – and Win didn’t seem to object, but the font is still nowhere to be found in that folder.

    Any clues how to proceed?

One more funny thing I’ve noticed – using the font installer (in the Font folder Firl>Install New Font) if I navigate it to the font folder which actually contains the fonts that came with WinXP it does not seem to recognize them as fonts either – nothing I do puts anything up in the “list of fonts” field. It just says “No fonts found”.

I believe that is because it does not recognize any NEW fonts to install – as you say yourself, you have navigated there via the “Install New Font” option. It is simply preventing you from re-installing something that is already there.

Otherwise, the MS instructions for installing new fonts is:
314960 – HOW TO: Install or Remove a Font in Windows XP.

I am not sure if you may need to have a postscript printer installed before XP will let you install the PS fonts? – but according to a Google search for xp install postscript font this does not appear to be the case. Plenty of advice though, if you follow that link.

Thank you! That site on Desktop Publishing that you referenced (found by Google) contained the answer. There are two types of files for Post Script fonts – a .pfb and a .pfm. You have to be sure you have both of them. I did – since I had copied the entire folder of PostScript fonts – but I didn’t know about this and the .pfm was in a folder within the folder of .pfbs that I had copied. The Windows Font Installer couldn’t recognize the .pfbs, but when I asked it to look in the Pfm folder for fonts, it found them all and put them into the list so I could select and install them.

        Voila!
        Merci beaucoup.
