Ubuntu ‘Noble Numbat’ 24.04 LTS beta is delayed due to the xz/liblzma security update causing a rebuild of binary packages.

Beta release is now due 11th April 2024 from the previously scheduled 4th April 2024 release date.

I was relieved to read that Kubuntu 24.04 will be using Plasma 5.27 rather than the recently released Plasma 6.0. The distro I normally use, KDE Neon, which is an Ubuntu derivative but with the very latest KDE packages, pushed out Plasma 6 some time ago, and even though I waited until the first couple of bug releases were in place before I allowed the upgrade, I still found the overall state of Plasma 6 to be somewhere in the “dumpster fire” range. Numerous bugs abounded, and on top of that, none of my plasmoids (widgets) worked. It is likely that a quick change on the manifest would make many or most of these work again, but given that there was nothing positive about Plasma 6 that I could see, I made the choice to convert my Neon installations to Kubuntu (which is actually quite easy).

Knowing that 24.04 uses Plasma 5.27, I will set a Timeshift snapshot and let it upgrade when it is available and see how it goes on one of my three listed in the .sig. If it goes poorly, I can easily revert.
