I have a Canon Pixma ip100 USB printer which was purchased new about 4 years ago. It had worked flawlessly up until 2 weeks ago. Now it will not print anything that uses the black ink cartridge. All I get is a blank sheet. The color ink tanks work fine. Following is a list of actions I’ve taken so far which haven’t helped:

    (1) Several cleanings and deep cleanings of the nozzles using the built-in utility
    (2) Replaced ink cartridge
    (3) Changed USB port
    (4) Uninstalled printer driver and re-installed using the updated driver from Canon’s website
    (5) Removed printhead and soaked in alcohol; blew out with compressed air; finished drying with low heat hair dryer
    (6) Soaked printhead in Windex; same drying procedure
    (7) Two nozzle deep-cleanings to saturate the pads after liquid cleanings

After all of the above, I’m back to where I started!….No black printing but the color works perfectly.

I am guessing the next logical step would be to replace the print head but I would like some feedback before I plunk down the $60 to purchase one!

    Thanks!

Their is (one) question I need to ask.The ink cartridge you are replacing it with is it a OEM (original equipment manufacturing)?
      Welcome to the lounge.:D

Is the printer worth a $60 investment for repairs, or would the $60 be better spent on another printer?

@ chowur – Yes, I use Canon cartridges!

@ Ted Myers – Yes, it’s definitely worth repairing. My only concern is that a new printhead won’t solve the problem. I’m just looking for feedback about something I may have missed or something else I can try.

Thanks to both of you for responding!

I don’t know if the print head is the problem. If it were the problem with the print head I would assume the color inks would be having problems as well. Have you actually taken the printer to a tech and they say it’s the print head? I think it more likely there is a failure in the electronics of the printer.

You raised a very interesting point Ted re: the color inks. I’m beginning to think a new printer is in order! Thanks for the timely and insightful response!

You are very welcome. I would hate to see you spend $60 and find it does not solve the problem. You did a very good cleaning of the print head without success, and the colors work fine. One other thing I might check, if you can open the printer, check and perhaps reseat any connectors you might find. might be worth an attempt to do this. Printers generally have a lot of movement and during this movement, if there are connectors they could loosen. Just a thought. If you screw up, you are not out anything since your looking at a new printer anyway and perhaps you will find a problem.
