I have a homebuilt rig with a eVGA MB currently running Windows 11 23H2. No problems. This PC is not running any firewalls or AV apps (outside of what Microsoft provides), and is not connected to the Internet via a VPN tunnel. It is a home computer.

I’m trying to update it to 24H2, as I’m being constantly prompted by Microsoft, to do, but when attempting to do so, it starts the process of downloading and, like clockwork, around 8% done, it stops and tells me that other updates are being process, and try again later. I verified that no other updates are being done.

What I have tried to do to remedy this:

    • Verified that I had enough drive space. I did.
    • Removed the Windows.old folder.
    • Reset the Windows update components: wuauserv, cryptSvc, bits, & msiserver.
    • Renamed the SoftwareDistribution and catroot2 folders with .old extensions.
    • Used the Windows Update Troubleshooter
    • Manually downloaded the update from the Microsoft Update Catalog.
    • Performed an in-place upgrade via the Windows 11 Installation Assistant. This proceeded farther along to around the 70% make, but keep cycling back to lower percentages until it finally failed. It produced the following error code: 0xc1900107
    • Ran sfc /scannow & DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image / RestoreHealth with an elevated Command Prompt. No errors found.

None of this helped. Maybe it’s telling me that I shouldn’t update at all. 😉

Anyone have any other ideas for me to try?

    Thanks in advance,

    Peter

I would not install 24H2 yet. Susan has this on hold.
Use GRC InControl to hold the update. (Reboot after taking control.)

Next you need to sort out the current updates.
I use the free WuMgr to show available updates (click the Refresh button, it looks like circular arrows).
Do you have any pending updates?
You can hide any you don’t want (like 24H2 or drivers).
If they still won’t install a repair install is required. (The process is the same for W11.)

      cheers, Paul

        Hi Paul,

Thanks for replying. Yes, I’m currently using InControl and am familiar with it.

Gave WuMgr a try. Great little utility. Thanks for recommending it. It did find some updates that were pending that Windows Update Manager did not, and I applied them. I then tried downloading the 24H2 update via WuMgr and the end result is that it still failed. The error code indicated an incomplete or corrupted download. I have 300/300 fiber, and have temporarily disabled both Windows Firewall and the Defender AV app to see if that would make any difference Alas that did not. Same error.

I think I will take your and Susan’s advice and hold off on 24H2 for now to avoid the aggravation. Maybe, when I get some spare time, I will look into the Repair Install. For now, since everything is working fine with 23H2, I’ll leave it there.

You could try an over-the-top install with a downloaded iso. These are the instructions for Win10, but it should very similar for Win11. It will DL 24H2. I have upgraded 3 of my machines with this method successfully.

ETA: This post points to the Win10 DL, here is the link for Win11.

I did this by d/l the iso for 24H2, putting that on a USB stick, plugging that in and clicking on setup.

You may first have to do a reset on your current build.

      Take lots of image backups!

What version did you lock in InControl ? If its 23H2 it blocks installing 24H2.

        Thanks … two things:

        1. I disabled InControl before I tried the update, making sure that it won’t interfere.
        2. When I do enable it, it is set for 24H2.

InControl doesn’t interfere, it sets registry values that control Windows Update.
          See this post for details.

Thanks to everyone who has provided assistance with this issue.

I ended up going with the Repair Install which allowed me to update my PC to 24H2. No issues were encountered throughout that process and appears that the update was completely successful.

As such, I consider this issue resolved.

Thanks again, and Happy New Year to all!

Yup – there are just too many things in win that can stop an install. Glad you got it.
