Just over a week ago a problem appeared with my primary email account. I can no longer send email through that account when using Microsoft Outlook 2007, nor will it send from a brand new version of Thunderbird, on my main work computer. Nor can I send invoices through that email from a different computer that is set to send through outlook/webmail not quickbooks servers. Earlier today I tried configuring the email account on the machine from which I send invoices in Outlook 2007. Still no ability to send.

Curiously, I can receive emails from this account on any platform.

I contacted Microsoft, they could find nothing wrong and declared the issue was not with outlook. I contacted my ISP, Charter/Spectrum, they said my service was normal, and there were no issues with their service. I contacted my site hosting company (techark internet services), they even used teamviewer to look at my settings, etc. They say the issue is not with them and that my website is working properly. They had me go into my sites control panel and use webmail, and sure enough email will send there with roundcube.

And that has made me even more confused, I can send email from the account on my iPhone, my android tablet, and even a gmail account I have set up to send through that email address and a couple more.  But not through my main setups for everyday work.

Have you ever encountered a problem like this? If you could offer a solution I would be very grateful.

One thing I always check on a client’s computer is Internet Options in Control Panel and LAN Settings then Connections tab.  Unless specified otherwise by the ISP involved the only thing on that page that should be the topmost item is the Automatically detect settings and there is no checkmark in Proxy settings.

Before you wonder "Am I doing things right," ask "Am I doing the right things?"

About a month ago, I had the exact problem with Charter/Spectrum email servers with several of my Charter email accounts.

I could receive, but not send messages with those accounts.

Luckily I have a Yahoo.com account and could send messages with that account, and an account on a public outgoing only email server that I set up years ago when I could not get Charter to send outgoing messages from my Android phone’s email client, K-9 Mail.

After fighting the problem for an evening, changing outgoing severs, changing settings, etc, I gave up and switched my primary email account over to the public outgoing email server and used that.

I used that for a few days and eventually the Charter server started working again. During that time frame, I checked DSLReports.com for reports on any problems with Charter/Spectrum and saw one report that in another part of the US, at least one Charter customer was having the same problem.

I’ll bet it’s a Charter problem, and as you found out they claimed there was no problems with their system, so it must by YOUR problem, but it’s probably not.

So, I just worked around it. If you can work around it somehow, just do that. If you want, you can set up an account at a free out-going only email server service. The one I use has some maximums for the free accounts.

Here’s a link to the one I use, check it out. Some Googling will turn up lots of others, I can’t remember why I picked this one, but for my purposes, it works fine.

      Here’s the web site:

      https://app.smtp2go.com/

There’s a very good section in their FAQS on how to setup your email program. It starts here:

      https://www.smtp2go.com/setup/

PS: I have no affiliation with this company, it’s just a service I use for my outgoing cell phone email and when Charter goes wonky.

      Good luck.

Many ISPs block outgoing port 25. Not sure about Charter. May have to set it to use another port if your web company supports it.

Have you ever encountered a problem like this?

Last decade, maybe 15 years ago, my partner had sporadic—maybe once a year for a week or so—problems with an ISP called Roadrunner. It turned out they had dodgy DNS servers, which used to break from time to time.

Wiki says “Road Runner High Speed Online, former name of Spectrum Internet”. Wiki also says “Spectrum or Charter Spectrum is a trade name of Charter Communications”. Bit of a coincidence.

Curiously, I can receive emails from this account on any platform

Sending and receiving are usually [always?] completely separate services, very different protocols. So your situation is normal.

Yep, that’s my first thought too. Try setting your outgoing SMTP port to 587 or 465, that could solve it.

      Lugh.

Oh hey, quoting is … different?

Well yeah. One of the notable exceptions where receiving and sending are the same protocol/connection, is MAPI between Outlook and an Exchange server.

Then there have been very rare workarounds by using IMAP to drop messages in an “Outgoing” folder on the server, so the server automatically picks them up and sends from there.

As for the port number… 465 would traditionally require you to use SSL too. (Not plain or TLS.)
