I’ve been using ArcSoft Photo Studio 5.5 for several years (it comes with Canon Printers with Scanners) for quick & simple photo editing. It worked fine with Windows 7 and Windows 10 – until version 1903. Now when I click “Save” after a jpeg edit, I get a window reading “Cannot Save To File”, with C:Users, etc. etc. right down to the folder where the jpeg is presently in. However, if I move photo to my Downloads folder or to my internal back-up drive, it works fine. Besides the work-around of moving the photos to a different drive, any idea how to fix this? Using Windows “Compatibility mode for Windows 7” or XP doesn’t help.

Patch reliability is unclear. Unless you have an immediate, pressing need to install a specific patch, don't do it. |

AskWoody_MVPSeptember 9, 2019 at 6:17 am #1944812The so-called Protected Folders mentioned as Microsoft Windows Defender’s anti-ransomware protections, is essentially doing just this. It messes with permissions and security descriptors. Exceptions can be made without turning off this protection. Just add an app or a process from the Recently Blocked drop-down list:
Windows 10 Defender – Controlled Folder Access
In the final screenshot, the Plus Sign shown for “Add an allowed app” can be right-clicked. This brings a drop-down menu of recently blocked apps or processes. Select from the list the app which was just blocked. Clicking on it will add it to the exceptions list and the app will no longer be blocked.
So in this case, after right-clicking the Plus Sign and seeing the recently blocked apps list, click on anything with Arcsoft in its name or description, and if you get everything, the app should work without further weakening your ransomware protections.
Alternatively, you could search the Protected Folders list, and find the folder you don’t want protected, and simply remove it from the list. But if this is My Documents or My Pictures, you might want to get more specific about which folder you no longer want to protect.
I’d go with unblocking the Arcsoft App.
You would have to do something like this no matter whose ransomware protections you were using. Third parties often make unblocking specific apps more difficult than this.
