Its been a while since I’ve come across this, and I cannot seem to find any old posts. I think it has to do with the Prefetch folder or the Temp Files but anyways,

When you browse to a folder and see a Word or PDF, or any file and Dbl-Click, nothing happens.

BUT if I go through the run command and browse the same file and run it, it will launch the designated program.

    Any Clues??

    Windows XP SP???

    Thanks

Me neither, and I’ve been Googling around all morning and can only come up with examples of specific file suffixes!

Speaking of which, have you checked in Folder Options, File Types on one suffix, such as PDF or DOC to make sure the file association hasn’t gotten accidently changed?

This could also be a virus or malware problem. There was something about EXE files a long time ago. But, for curiosity sake, do you have an AV program running; have you run any malware scans with something like Malwarebytes to make sure a “bad guy” hasn’t crept in?

I’m not up on Prefetch, so I don’t know what would happen if you were to empty it.

I ran SpyBot and I downloaded all the Patches.

Here is the UPDATE: WINDOWS EXPLORER may be the issue

I don’t know if the user waited long enough. I know I didnt.

So for a PDF File, i waited almost 90 Seconds for Adobe to launch and display.

WORD doc took 2 minutes. (Remember, if I use the START | RUN feature and put the file path it will work)

Windows Explorer: If I Rt-Click on a file it takes about the 2 minutes for the shortcut menu to pop up.

I cant try this on SafeMode because I am connected to this PC remotely.

If all fails I will have to have the persone send laptop back for a re-image. System restore will not load the past 5 restore points. I have tried as far back as 2 weeks ago.

For System Restore, have you tried disabling the antivirus software before running System Restore?

For the log time lags, start task manager before attempting any of the functions which take a long time. Then try one and see if you can identify a process that might be the culprit.
