Cannot download .exe file

I created a self-extracting .exe file with WinRar and sent it to a friend. She said that Outlook does not let her download the file that is attached to the email. Can anyone tell me how to download an attached file to an email in Outlook? I do not have this type of problem because I use Yahoo and not Outlook so I cannot tell her how to fix the problem.

ZIP the file. Outlook does not let you access .exe files.

I had a similar problem that we solved just last night, only the receiving program was Outlook Express.

We were able to access the exe file by going to Tools>Options>Security and turning off the option to block access to files that might be viruses. Then we opened the email, saved the attachment to the drive, and turned the option back on.

We did not have to have the email resent. The attachment on the original email simply became accessible while the option was turned off (and was inaccessible again when we turned it back on).

I don’t have Outlook on this computer, so I can’t try it for you, but you might see if you can find a similar option or preference and turn it off.

For security reasons Outlook bars a number of file formats which could contain malware. Joe Perez’s solution to use a Zip format is best, since native Windows XP and higher can open zip files. You did not mention your friend’s Outlook version, but through Outlook 2003 there is no setting corresponding to the Outlook Express setting mentioned by Organizer.

One alternative solution is to install Ken Slovak’s free Attachment Options Add-In, which allows easy modification of the registry settings controlling permitted Outlook attachments.

If you want to try to have her change her Outlook attachment settings, see the following:

1.) You may receive an “Outlook blocked access to the following potentially unsafe attachments” message in Outlook for the Microsoft instructions on how to do this manually.
2.) Slovak Technical Services Attachment Options for a shareware program from a well known Outlook MVP
3.) Outlook Permissions Manager a free program to manage attachment permissions.
