Cannot copy/paste in file

For some of my files in excel, the copy/paste function has disappeared. I’ve somehow turned it off. When I attempt to copy (either using CTRL-C or the menu selection), the flashing outline appears to show that it’s be captured by the clipboard. Despite that, I receive a message that says “item not captured.” When I click off of that cell into another one to paste, the flashing outline disappears. The data is no longer in my clipboard and eligible to be copied. I tried to look up the help screens but it didn’t really answer the problem. Do you know? THANKS!!!!
