I had a macro, ‘FlipSelection’, that I assigned to a custom button on a custom menu, later I modified the macro and renamed it ‘InvertRows’. Now the custom button has the (now non-existent) ‘FlipSelection’ attached to it, I can assign ‘InvertRows’ to the button and it sticks until I close XL, but when I reopen XL the button has reverted to ‘FlipSelection’. The macros are/were in Personal.xls. I thought that custom buttons and menus and their assigned macros were stored in excel.xlb and that this was saved at each shutdown, but this appears not to be so as the only .xlb file on my machine was last modified on 18/12/2003. Help.

Do you show hidden files and folders in Windows Explorer? In recent versions, the .xlb file is stored in a subfolder of a hidden folder in your profile.

Yes Hans I do have W.E. set to show hidden files.

It rather looks as if when XL is closed it is not saving my .xlb file.

Try renaming or moving the existing .xlb file to see if it is recreated when you next run (and quit) Excel.

            Hans

I have tried both renaming and moving the excel.xlb file, and no new xlb file is created on shutting down XL.

Despite this XL then reopens with all my custom menus and buttons present. Weird

There MUST be an .xlb file somewhere where you haven’t found it.

            Equally weird

Since renaming and moving excel.xlb, then closing and reopening XL, then assigning ‘InvertRows’ to the menu item/button, then closing and reopening XL again, ‘InvertRows’ now is still attached to the menu item/button. But again no new xlb file!
