I got a caller who was freaking out cause some emails were sent to her boss, without her knowledge and it did not show up on her Sent folders.

I checked her Outlook Rules and there they were. Two rules that were very specific as to who to forward emails to and under specific conditions.

She said she has never seen these before. I asked her if she was away for a while and if they had a temp. She said her PC was locked and she did not have anyone log in with her account.

    So my question is:

Could these Rules have bee placed remotely, or from another user without her knowledge?

Could some rules be attached to an email and get imported by other users?

I told her I would look into it because she somehow would not believe me when I said these rules must have been created by her alone.

    Thanks

    Chris

Could you provide more information on the environment? Is it POP3/Hosted Email like Google/Exchange 03/07

As far as I am aware client side rules like that cannot be pushed remotely and if they were it would require someone quite knowledgeable.

Here is the standard way a set of rules could be exported/imported.

      http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/outlook/HP052429261033.aspx?pid=CH063564671033

I am unaware of the situation but would management/IT have put this rules in place?

You are right in the sense that it is a manual process unless someone more knowledge then me can tell us how to push client side rules.

See How to setup an outlook rule on a remote machine(s) – Server Fault for a discussion of “pushing” rules. Need to know more about your setup as mentioned in post #2.

I did actually skim over that page and forgot to mention OWA (Outlook Web Access) could have been used to set these rules up. Is that the only method you are referring to Joe as I don’t see any others which would apply here. Just checking I am not blind when reading reference material.

It is not really “push” but someone could export a .rwz file and import it if they have access to the target PC.

I am sorry I skipped all the pertinent info.. Its been a while since I posted here and I am rusty…

but this actually means that I have been getting A LOT of answers from this site so I dont need to create new posts.

      That being said:

The Client is Outlook 2007, running on Windows XP

      The Server is Exchange 2007.

I will study the replies today.

      Thanks
