In my Word 2000 machine both paragraphs appear with the aliased stylename despite your experience in Word 2003.

What result do you get if you save the file out to RTF or XML and then re-open that exported file?

Do the style types (eg para, char, table, list) differ for the two displayed styles?

      Hello,
I have two styles in my document named “Note Heading” and “Note Heading,Note” – This is supposed to be impossible.
I have tried to delete “Note Heading” but it persists. The delete confirmation dialogue box pops up, I click OK, but the style is still there.
I have also tried to delete it through the Organizer with no success.

      Any ideas

I’ve tried deleting “Note Heading,Note” suspesting a linkage but no luck.
      I’ve attached a sample document,

      Thanks in advance
      Judith

Thanks Andrew. I tried RTF with the sample and it removed the offending style.
      Both styles were paragraph.

Before I try this with my 90 page lesson, are there any downsides to saving as RTF?
      Thanks again,
      Judith

If your document is only text and basic formatting then there will be no downsides.

If your file has graphics then the file size will swell (eg the JPGs are converted to a BMP format through this method).

An alternative may be to save out to RTF and check the styles. Then delete all the content from that file and copy/paste in the content from the original file. It might just work since the file is not supposed to support the same stylename in two variants as you have discovered.

Another alternative may be to save back to an earlier version of Word (eg Word 2000 doesn’t appear to show the problem) and then try it again in Word 2003.

          Andrew,
I’ve just save my main file to RTF and back to DOC. All my graphics are linked so they were untouched. In fact the file size went down from 1200K to 900K.
It looks like a lot of hidden garbage may have been cleaned out.
          Thank you for your advice.

You can use BBCodes to format your content.
Your account can't use all available BBCodes, they will be stripped before saving.
