I have software that will not work on Windows 7.  I have a machine with Windows 7 Home Premium.  I want to be able to use Remote Desktop.  I have a Windows 7 Professional Upgrade Disk.  Can I upgrade the Windows 7 Home machine to Windows 7 Pr using only the disk and not have to do a clean install?

What software will work on Pro but not Home?

Sorry, I meant that the program will not work on Windows 10, but only on Windows 7.  My windows 7 machine is a Home Premium machine, but I have a Windows 7 Pro upgrade disk.  I currently log into the Windows 7 machine using Chrome Remote Desktop and that works OK, but I often have to download many files I create and have to do it 1 by one.  I also have connectivity issues, so I’d like to just use Remote Desktop to connect over my internal network.  The program is a legacy kitchen design program with a USB dongle.

Another question – Can I download patches to update the Windows 7 on the machine, or due to Microsoft no longer supporting Windows 7, am I out of luck?

Don’t know about the Pro upgrade.

You could use a file transfer program like Snapdrop.

Windows 7 can be patched manually. See this thread: https://www.askwoody.com/forums/topic/standalone-installer-script-for-windows-7-esu-regardless-the-license/

about upgrading from Win7 Home to Win7 Pro

answered somewhere in MDL forums Windows 7 section (maybe search there)

there are at least two ways to do that and keep/preserve existing user files and apps – I will not discuss about them here but someone already came up with the answer(s) in that MDL forums; just look there instead for the answers

Have you tried the various compatibility modes? I’m not a Win10 expert, but there is a way to access this, possibly a right click on the icon of the program in question, and see if compatibility mode with earlier Windows versions clears up your issues. I’ve tried this many times and it works often.
