I deleted the “hibernate” files from my computer (Lenovo 3000 C200 laptop) How can I restore or is this not possible? any help would be appreciated. Thank you

What operating system are you using at the moment? Also, when you say you “deleted” the files, do you mean the actual physical files in the operating system or settings in Power Options

Thanks for replies from yourself and Doc Watson and John. I deleted files from system (OS Vista Home Basic) but thought there might have been somewhere where I could have recovered them from. Ron

I’m still not sure how you deleted the hibernate file or what you mean, since, I guess also in Vista, only way is by disabling the setting in Power options. On the other hand, as we shall see, one can disable hibernation in some odd way.

But I could interpret this wrong, and you mean you deleted some files used by the OS to hibernate.

As described in other posts the hiberfil.sys is used by the OS to save the contents of the RAM memory when the PC is hibernated. Thus, I would say, it is volatile to its nature, it is a snap-shot of the memory before hibernation. If you wake up the PC and do something, the “old” hibernation file is of no use, it is updated every time you hibernate the PC. So therefore I do not understand why you would like an “old” hibernation file. I suppose you mean you would like the Hibernation feature back (available).

Also in Windows Vista you can use the Disk Cleanup Utility, but apparently among the options is the possibility to delete the “Hibernation File Cleaner” (odd name for the hibernation file or Hibernation feature). Anyhow, if one do not use hibernation it is possible to remove this file. This will disable hibernation. But oy! Now you can not see the Hibernate option in Power Options.

If this is the case on your laptop you need to enable the hibernation feature.

-Click Start button (whatever )
-Type “command” in search box
-Right-click “Command Prompt” in the list and click Run as administrator (and type password if prompted)
-At the Command Prompt type “powercfg /hibernate on”

In order to ‘tidy up’ the appearance of my files on disk when viewed in Disk Defragmenter -> Analyse, I occasionally turn off Hibernate in the Control Panel -> Power Options, which has the effect of deleting c:hiberfil.sys (attributes are: HSA), do a few defrags, then turn on Hibernate again, which recreates c:hiberfil.sys. This has never caused me any problems.

Hiberfil.sys has the same size on disk as the amount of real memory on your PC, and to which the contents of memory are saved when your PC hibernates (as previous links indicate).

PS I occasionally delete and recreate the Paging File for the same tidy-up reasons!

I wanted to test your method, John, but when I went looking I could not find “hiberfil.sys.” anywhere on my system. I suppose that this could be the result of never having the Hibernate function turned on. I always disable that problematic and annoying function whenever I set up a machine.

I defrag my Page File with PerfectDisk about once a month or as indicated when I run my weekly system defrag. You can pickup a 30 day trial here.

I don’t think even PerfectDisk will move the (hidden/system) hiberfil.sys nor the (hidden/system) pagefile.sys — will it?!

As I said, I don’t have “hyberfil.sys” on my machine (even when I choose to display the hidden system files), but I don’t believe that would be defraged by PerfectDisk. The Page file is not moved, but can be defragmented offline when you reboot the system (one of the defrag options).

Doc,
I know you know this, but I’m still a little confused why you, as in your other post, went looking for a hiberfil.sys when it is only created and thus there when one enable Hibernation. Why have a file of zero size around when Hibernation is disabled? It is not such a system file per se.

I think your both correct in that the Hibernation file and Page file are not defragmented, though Page file may be an option at boot time in some products (also the PageDefrag by Sysinternals ). Myself, I have used John’s MO sometimes to tidy-up HDD, or PageDefrag. As to Hibernation, I have used it very little during the years.

Hey Argus,

I went looking because I wanted to see what John was doing. I assumed that since it was a “system” file that it would be there as an empty receptical waiting to be filled. It wouldn’t be the first time I’ve found a file with nothing in it.

I checked the setting for the offline defrag function of PerfectDisk and it is more through than I remembered. It defrags both the hibernate and Page files as well as some other system files.

Hello there.
On your machine, there is an icon named Lenovo Care. It should be on your desktop. If not there is a key which calls up the program. The key has what appears to be a wrench in a suitcase on it. It is just to the right of your powerup key.
Call up the program and it has a vast array of solutions to problems you may encounter on your LeNovo computer.

The simple way to restore your hibernate file has already been suggested. To reiterate, go into power options and turn off hibernation then defrag then turn it back on. You will then have a freshly created file. Also as was pointed out earlier, Perfectdisk will defrag the file offline. IMHO hibernation is great for a laptop but potential misery on a desktop. This should hopefully be your biggest problem in life.

But if there is no Hibernate option in Power Options?

That’s why I suggested “powercfg -h on”, since a little cleaning session with Disk Cleanup Tool can remove the Hibernate option if one don’t look out.

I was able to fix that on one laptop (mine) by running chkdsk at boot-up. After that I ran sfc/scannow and have not had an issue like that since.
