I did a search on “Calculating Time Remaining” and got no hits. Hard to believe… Copy, delete, etc., take WAY too long. Just deleting an icon, and you get the CTR window – thinking – thinking – etc., and then it finally deletes the item. This is bogus, and I would have expected it to be WELL covered here…

And you did this search where – the web or here in The Lounge? Do you suppose that your search phrase may be worded a little too specific or possibly need re-phrasing? It would certainly help if you could tell us a little more, such as which “icon” you’re trying to delete, how you’re doing these copy operations that take too long, more about your computer, etc. You should keep in mind that Windows Vista is still quite new and perhaps no one else HERE is having the same problem as you describe. What is it that you think is “bogus”?

We’re here to help but your post leaves a lot of unanswered questions in my mind.

Got lots of hits on the web – but none in the Lounge. Many people complaining about it – but I was expecting to find the answer here… 🙂

The ‘icon’ was just an example…An itty bitty file taking 10-30 seconds to delete – the most of it being with the dialog up with the “Calculating Time Remaining” heading.

I’m wondering if this has something to do with the other issue I had, and that is that I always get, EVERY signon, or everytime I do a search/delete/copy, etc.,
a dialog that says, “Microsoft Window Search Indexer has stopped working”, and then the options are, “Check online for a solution (recommended)” and “Close.”

Earlier I went into services and disabled Microsoft Search, and that resolved the issue of the dialog box, but I decided to set it back to Automatic and just keep clicking on the “Check online for a solution” button – hoping that maybe they’ll (M$ST) get tired of it and just fix the problem.

Another possibility is reloading Vista, just in case I’ve messed something up that caused the problem.

As far as “bogus” is concerned – it is the length of time it takes for Vista to Copy/Delete/etc., objects…

What other services and protection have you altered?

Have you turned off the UAC?

          What software have you installed?

I’m not ignoring you…just didn’t get home until late… I have turned off UAC. and back on. and back off. etc. Depends on how frustrated I get with all the ‘you gotta be careful’ messages…

I have MANY programs installed… Do you want the listing from my “uninstall” dialog?

            • #1056897

              “MANY programs installed”

Are they ALL Vista approved programs?

Yes, let us see what you have installed?

There are many side affects when playing with the UAC. I have found that if you leave it on and alone, after the training period, you are not bothered with it as much.

Was this an upgrade install of Vista or a fresh install? Did you run the Windows Vista: Upgrade Advisor and check out all the inconsistencies?

Brand new machine; fresh install. However, I DID run the Advisor on my old system…FWIW

In checking just the first few on your list Adobe Audition 2.0 says it is compatible with XP (Adobe Audition – System requirements). Even though it may install on a Vista PC that does not mean it is fully compatible. Carbonite says the most current version is compatible with Vista. Do you have the most current version? You need to check out every one of the applications on your list and make sure they are Vista compatible. If it is not explicitly stated that an application is Vista compatible you should uninstall it.

Also, see the link to the Windows Vista Compatability pdf on the right side of Adobe – Support.

The most likely culpret in those activities taking so long is your anti-virus software. Most AV software will scan a file, even if what you are doing is deleting it.

        > The most likely culpret in those activities taking so long is your anti-virus software. <

I don't think so. I've had NOD32 from the time I had the system, and there was no problem initially. And then something happened that I haven't been able to define, and Copy/Delete went into the bucket. I think it might have something to do with the Search service (see my other reply).

          Dave,
You need to tell us more about this system.

          What CPU does it have?
          What brand name is it?
          How much RAM?
          Disk size and unused spaced?
          It a dual boot?
Did you install Vista and what version?
If so was it clean or upgrade?

            1) Intel Core 2 duo E6600 5715 CPU
            2) No brand. Put together from parts at Micro Center.
            3) 2G ram
            4) C: 750G; D: 2 320G Raid 0; Massive amount of unused space
            5) Dual boot – no.
            6) Vista Business
            7) Clean install
