A little more detail please. Are you getting the UAC “Access denied” message? How are your “View” settings in Folder options?

Always create a fresh drive image before making system changes/Windows updates; you may need to start over!
We all have our own reasons for doing the things that we do with our systems; we don't need anyone's approval, and we don't all have to do the same things.
We were all once "Average Users".

        no to dual boot question

attached file has screen shots of (1) error message that I get when clicking on the C: drive in windows explorer and (2) the folder settings (I reset to defaults)

Also, this is an office laptop that has been used by others lately, so I’m not sure what changes may have been made.

        Thanks

      J.E.,

Is this computer by any chance dual booting? If so is the C: drive the one with the non-booted copy of windows? HTH

Right click on the C drive in Windows explorer and select properties. Click on the security tab. What permissions are set when you highlight Administrators and Users?

        BINGO!
That was it. Don’t know how permissions got changed, but they’re back where they were
        Thanks!

Could you please post a screen shot of the Disk Management screen, e.g.
      34640-Diskmanagement

Please make sure you adjust the upper section by dragging the divider so that all drives are visible also adjust the right side so the entire (all partitions) disk is shown for each HDD/SDD.

A snapshot of Disk Management might help also, and what type of user account is it? It looks like it has something to do with permissions.

      Happy to hear it worked.
